Was at the cinema on Saturday watching The Lone Ranger, which I thoroughly enjoyed. It's not a short movie by any means, but it's not a long film compared to say, Lawrence of Arabia which I love now as much as I did when I myself was a teenager. However with an hour to go the lights popped up on phones in the cinema, the more teenage audience members looking at facebook I presume, and that and other recent trips to the cinema has lead me to believe that this generation has a very limited attention span. They can't seem to concentrate on anything that has an actual storyline which requires some degree of attention. That's just my opinion anyways, I could be wrong but I don't think I am.. What do you think?

I think your anecdote is more a reflection of the terrible state of modern cinema than it is the attention span of the nation's youth.

Probably, or maybe they're addicted to Facebook and Twitter and it's pretty obvious in the darkened confines of the cinema.

They can't drive for more than 5 mins without consulting their phones.
They can't walk down the street without consulting their phones.
I'm not sure their attention spans are worse, per se.
It's just that a distraction is there for them, praying on their naturally flighty brains.

I've got 2 young kids (4 and 2) and their attention seems OK for their age. Hopefully its only tennagers? It's what puts me off going to the cinema these days. So easy to get distracted by the phones lighting up and catching you attenti.........SQUIRREL !!!!

If you're going to quote the big man himself, at least get it right! :D

Homer: "You see when I watch a boring movie I make up one in my head. I have a very short attention span.”
    Movementarian: "Oh I see—“
Homer (chasing a butterfly): "Oooh look a butterfly, hee-hee-hee!”

Homer Simpson: Oh yeah, and I'm not easily impressed. Woah, a blue car!

It's not just teenagers a lot of adults can't leave their phones alone either. I was in the barbers on Saturday and everyone waiting in there was staring at their phones. The thing that irritates me is when you're at the checkout, people haven't got their payment ready because they're busy with their phones and they end up fumbling for their card or cash; it's also rude because they're totally ignoring the checkout person, no courtesy of giving eye contact or registering the existence of the person ringing your shopping through. Also people walking into the road, I've been driving for nearly 30 years and I can't recall anyone walking into the road for almost all that time but in the last year it's happened 4 times, one teenager listening to her ipod and the other three have been 20 somethings responding to their phones. I'm surprised we don't have more road deaths with people walking blindly into the path of an oncoming car.

Came in expecting loads of "limited attention span" jokes.

    Left satisfied. :)

Makes you think, how did we manage before mobile texting and facebooking, saw a couple of kids before, they were texting each other when they sat right next to each other, what happened to the art of conversation?

The phone is a real distraction. People have forgotten how to live in the moment and sit just watching the poetry of life around them.

Yes and the smartphone has made things even worse. Adults do it too. I've seen people playing on the golf course and taking phone calls or reading texts - nobheads. I don't even take my phone with me a lot of the time, I managed 30 to 40 years without one so why should I need one now.

I spent the weekend on an island off the coast of Donegal....no Sky tv, no wifi, and at times no phone signal at all. It was absolute bliss. The battery on my phone died, and despite having a charger with me I didn't bother with it. My 3 kids, (12, 7 and 5) loved the weekend, and didn't complain once about not having any of their tech toys.

On the other hand, my 53 yr old sister and her 24 yr old son moaned so much about not being able to check their Facebook that they took the boat over to the mainland one evening just so they could check their accounts. :suicide:

you lot sound so miserable and old :rotfl:.

I think the fact it was the lone ranger, which was universally considered awful might have been a contributing factor

Have to agree with this. I haven't been to a single cinema showing in ages where somebody hasn't been using a phone/Ipad etc.

Can't some folks' life exist without checking their Facebook for a measly 2 hours or so?!
How do these people manage on holiday???

Have you even seen the movie? Look at the comments from these AV forums, not a single bad comment from the people who have seen it, including yours truly. :D

People can't go 2 hours without eating/drinking in a cinema, never mind phones.

As for holidays, surely most people take their phones/ipads with them?
Everywhere has wifi these days, for free access to stuff.

People don't exercise the art of conversation anymore, going to the barbers in the past we'd have a laugh and a joke while waiting and we were all relative strangers. Nowadays even when your with your friends they're not completely there because their attention is half on the phone. I'm starting to ignore friends who keep responding to their phone every minute because I'm sick and tired of repeating myself.

Same here. I think it's the height of ignorance when you're talking to someone and they get a beep on their phone for a text message and they just stop listening to you and read/answer the text instead. They wouldn't do it in a normal conversation so what makes them think it's acceptable because it's a text message?

When that happens now I just say "oh **** you then, you're obviously not interested", unless it's a woman then I'll tone the language down a bit.

I can't remember the last time I didn't get free wifi in a hotel.
Even our rented holiday villa had free unlimited wifi.

Years ago no body really had a mobile with them in a cinema, so when the film didn't keep them entertained they would start talking to each other....Can't win

    Fair point.
Decide what's worse, people chatting or screens lighting up.
