    Hello...

Anyone else been caught up in this Emo fad? Really it's including a lot of bands that don't really fit into that category... not that anyone should fit a category of course.

I haven't listened to any metal for a long while.

I Recommend 'United By Fate' by Rival Schools... Simply incredible. Best album this year.

    I'm with Dave N.
This "Emo thing" didn't come to you in a dream did it?

I thought this thread was maybe announcing a new Rod Hull album or something. The last one I got when I was a kid was in the 70's on vinyl. It was crap even then.

Emo is a tag/label given to a certain type of punk/rock.

It stands for 'emotional'... which (quite rightly) everyone thought was pathetically girly for 'hard' music, so it just became emo.

Emo and post-hardcore is enjoying something of a resurgence. There's some fantastic bands out there at the moment, and quite a lot jumping on the bandwagon.

    "Emo is a tag/label given to a certain type of punk/rock "

Ah that'll be what used to be called... "punk rock" then :)

Never heard the term but thanks for the definition - interesting phenomena this micro labelling thing.

    Cheers

I used to be into house, then garage, but portacabin is the thing now of course

'Punk rock' nowadays refers to total crap like Greenday (who were once quite good), Offspring (ditto), Sum 41, Blink 182 etc... Mainstream pop punk toss.

    Punk = crap, Emo/Post-hardcore = good.

I didn't know what the "emo" thing was, But Rival Schools kick ass. I can't wait to see them at Reading.

What other bands are classed in this "Emo" Thing?

Rival Schools drummer, Sam Siegler, was in Youth Of Today.

Other Emo I'm getting into a lot; Weezer; Saves The Day; Jimmy Eat World; Wilt; Hundred Reasons; (the almighty) At The Drive-in; Nada Surf.

The Foo Fighters too I suppose.

    Millencolin also kick ass.

I know what your on about pionton (and so does squirrel god, i think). I've got albums by most of the band you've just named, so i guess i'm cought up in emo. Try some incubus and some bad religon. Good stuff. Incubus especially (though not really emo?)

If all the bands in the world MUST be given a category, then I'd say that The Get Up Kids are probably the best "emo" band, but there's loads of others well worth a listen... Kerbdog and Wilt needing a special mention (even if they are pretty much the same group!)

Emo.... what a silly silly word. I could play 3 bands who are all considered "emo", one could be a lets scream our faces off metal band, and another could be some mellow acoustic stuff. How do these extremes fit into the same genre? I suppose you could say it's more to do with lyrics... personal experiences/relationships etc but many other types of music deal with this too. It just seems to be the new word for alternative rock.

    Very good points Refused. :smashin:

I guess it also fits in "New Wave". The Clash were new wave, Bad Religion were new wave, Green Day were new wave, Less than Jake were new wave and I guess My Chemical Romance are new wave these days. But with 30 years between them they can't all be new wave. Some must just be a wave.

On another forums I'm a regular of, some of the 'Emo' kids were naming the bands they listen to and Led Zeppelin came up a lot. I also listened to samples of the other bands they mentioned and the music is of all different genres.
I was then told that Emo isn't abourt a particular style of music but a style of personality.

That is just silly. For some reason "emo" kids seem to be regarded as self harmers. I'm not sure why, it's totally ridicolous. If you listen to some so called "emo" bands they are totally against self harm and a lot have pretty positive messages.
As for setting fire to body parts.... well that's just stupid teenagers who have watched too much Jackass.

I don't mean to be anal or anything but this whole current emo trend really annoys me as it's just pop-punk/rock IMO. I still think of emo as Texas is the reason; Sunny day real estate; Fugazi; Tears for fears etc etc

    I love Fugazi!
I totally agree, everything seems to get lumped into the "emo" genre lately. And it has all become stereotyped beyond belief.
