Generally they sound fine and are loud enough, but I think the bass is a bit woolly and lacks extension. I use them mainly for music & movies and feed them from an Creative X-Fi card.

I was thinking of either upgrading to the Z5500 or spending the same amount of money on a dedicated sub woofer. Which of these options would be the better idea?

Which X-Fi card do you have and what are you looking for in terms of sound?
Clarity of sound or booming bass, 2.0, 2.1 or 5.1?

It's an Xtreme Gamer.

I'm looking for 5.1 with a clear deep sound.

With 5.1 then Z5500 or if you can stretch to Creative Labs Gigaworks S750.
