    Hi!

Am thinking of replacing my PS3 with the Sony BDP-S350. My main reasons being the terrible fan noise on the PS3, no matter where or how its placed it comes on whenever it wants to and sounds like it going to takeoff! ha. Also, the picture quality when playing standard dvd's in my opinion has something to be desired of. My HD Xbox 360 player did a much better job.

I dont use the PS3 for games and its hooked up to a Sony 32v2500 TV and a Sony STRDG820 receiver. Playback of Blu-ray dvd's is fantastic, picture is amazing, the HD sound is brilliant coming through my B&W speakers, I dont need my bass sub anymore ha. But standard dvd's, really poor picture when dark images are on the screen and its far too grainy. Have played with all the settings on the tv and PS3, got it slightly better but still not happy.

Considering I dont use my PS3 for games, would I be losing out on anything if I changed to the 350?

I am using two different HDMI cables, a good quality QED cable and a cheap looking cable that came with the PS3. Am wondering if I get another QED cable will that make any difference?

    Suggestions and advice very welcome.

    Cheers

    Smiler

You might gain slightly with the S350's DVD playback as well. :smashin:
    All the best.

How " so much" better? Than the 350 and 550? ( both Sonys?)

Not arguing with what you saw demoed but I have both the 350 Sony and 35 Panny ATM and get confused at just how much better the Panasonic is consistently described at being
I need to go to specsavers.. I think

As for better than PS3 ... I would be surprised if the 350 or 35 are better exceptionally with BDs playback on the Sony 32v2500 but I suspect that for DVD playback they definitely would be and audio, definitely all the way
Why not keep your PS3 and get a nice Sub £100 DVD player unless you want another BD player? or that PS3 fan noise is a big turn off..the 350 is silent..:)

I had a 350, 550, and 55 all here around chistmas time and struggled to tell any difference between them on Blu ray. 55 has gone back now. I would buy on price unless you need a specific feature. 350 is a very good little machine for the money.

I did exactly this in January, and dead chuffed with the results

The BDP-S350 gives a more stable picture on large panning shots (Planet Earth vistas look great), but the real benefit is sending bitstream audio over HDMI to let the amp decode the signal. Definately a bigger, wider soundstage than the PS3. Don't get me wrong, LPCM from the PS3 was good, but this sounds just a bit more defined and has more punch.

As others have said the Panny BD35 probably has the edge on quality, but if you hurry you can pick up the Sony deal in Blockbuster for £199 and get the player with 6 movies (Iron Man, Hancock, Mama Mia and Wall-e with Sony then sending you Batman Begins and Casino Royale on registration). Not sure if all stores are still running this though so if not check out Richer Sounds as the Sony is around £160 standalone.

Happy shopping, whatever you decide :)

As per the above, the PS3 decodes audio internally, whereas the S350 or BD35 send it to the amp to decode and i personally found that better... plus you get the joy of seeing the words DTS MA (technically they're letters...) or True HD on the amp.

SD playback will be improved and if you have a lot of R1 DVDs then the Panasonic would be worth the extra as it can do them at 24fps - a feature unique to it!

At the prices you can get them for, they're both a bargain!!

    Sony BDPS350 Blu-ray Disc Player 1080p Full HD: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo

    Panasonic DMP-BD35EB-K Profile 2 Blu-ray Disc Player: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo

If it were my money, i'd get the Panasonic.... oh and the HDMi leads will make no difference if the run is under 10m or so.. but by all means try both and see which you prefer!

I have both a PS3 and the S350. Both very nice machines, but if you are just interested in BR then the 350 is the way to go. For the price, excellent performance. Has raised the quality of the pic from my 4yr+ old projector up a notch. For that I'm well pleased. :smashin:

    i have a ps3 and a 350, i find the ps3 better for sound and the 350 for picture.
biggest bug with the 350 is the very juddery forwarding compared to the ps3 but between them i get the best of both worlds.:)
