Hey guys, this is my first post but I've been floating about the forum as a guest for a while.

Ok here's my "dilemma"; I have a Logik 26" LCD TV which I've had about 2 months. I use my Xbox 360 to play DVD's and am not sure whether it upscales or not, even though my TV says it's playing in 1080i (That's the maximum resolution my tv goes to) but I don't know as I don't have an upscaling dvd player so I can't tell the difference.

Anyway, is it worth me getting a blu-ray player for a 26" 1080i TV?

If I do get one I want to spend around £180 max. Are Blu-ray players likely to reduce massively in January?

What good shops are there for Blu-ray players as Currys are very limited.

Any help would be appreciated, cheers.

Welcome to the forum Beany31. :)
The 360 scales DVD :smashin: even if it didn't,then your TV would do it anyway.
To be honest,i would stick with DVD as the upgrade to BD on a 26" is going to be small.
Your choice of course.

You say it scales dvd, do you mean upscales? Yeah I know the difference isn't going to be an amazing amount because it only shows on bigger screens am I right? But what I mean is there going to be a nice sharp image with good sound, more than the upscaled dvd?

Upscales yeah. :smashin:
Nice clean image.Sound will depend on what system you have?

I don't have an upscaling player, just the 360 at present. I don't know if there's a difference between the two's capabilities as I'm new to these sorts of things.

Your TV's INFO reads 1080i right? that's the incoming signal so the 360 is scaling DVD to 1080i and then sending to your display. :smashin:

Yeah it says 1080i (1090x1080) 60Hz when I turn the Xbox on and this is through HDMI cable. I'm guessing Blu-ray wouldn't really be noticeable on my tv?

And the output of the DVD on my xbox 360 would literally be the same as a specialised upscaling dvd player?

As KF says, on a 26" screen, the benefits are going to be marginal unless you are sat right in front of it.

If you notice things like blocking on DVD's, then Blu-ray tends not to have such things, and now with BonusView and BD-Live, the extras are starting to perhaps get more interesting than they were on DVD.

New films on release are only a few £'s more than DVD on BD, so whilst replacing catagoue titles can be very expensive, building a collection of new titles is less so. So, if you think you might get a bigger screen at some point in the future, and buy new DVD's when released, BD may not be such a bad move.

As for player prices, Sony have a price rise in the new year, but in such a competitive market, who's to know if that will get passed on? In terms of big price cuts, who knows? Best advice right now is if you can find a deal such as the Blockbuster one, and it seems like a good price, might as well take the plunge. Post Jan-pre Easter is always quiet, and such bundles probably won't exist, but that's pure guesswork on my part.

Ok so for me personally I'd imagine Blu-ray wouldn't be worth it?

On a 26" screen, buying blu-ray is throwing money out the window.

Thanks for your input guys. But what I'm going to do is buy a second hand one, maybe from the trade section here, like maybe spend £130 or so and see how it goes, I may notice the difference myself anyway as I've been used to dvd and what not.

And the chances are in the future, maybe 2 years I'll buy a new TV if Blu-ray is still likely to be around.
