I'm thinking of buying a white Jap PSP, am I likely to encounter any problems with a Jap machine over a UK machine?

Am I right that I won't be able to use the link up on multi player games? Anything else I should bear in mind?

One of my main uses would be emulation.

    Cheers

What would customer support be like if it went wrong given Sony's displeasure and efforts to stop people importing Jap and US PSPs to the UK?

I've ordered a v1.5 psp from a Jap site. Without thinking I selected Airmail so now i'm waiting. It will still prob be here before the shops get any in. Will let you know if it arrives ok. The site is:

    http://www.success-hk.com/pp/success.asp

Out of interest anyone ever ordered from it? They still have v1.5 in stock.

That's incorrect. You can use all PSPs together as long as they are running the same software.

For example a US and JPN PSP can play ridge racer together as long as they are both running the same software i.e. 2 UK copies of Ridge. If the games are from different regions - no joy.

The other thing to note is the JPN PSP comes with a 2 prong plug but as the charger is multi voltage just get a cheap adapter.

I have a JPN PSP and have had no problems with it at all.

Got mine from Lik-Sang.com and it came with 6 months warranty. They have the white PSPs in stock. Took about 4 days to arrive by courier. As they ship by courier you will get stung for a tax bill - mine was £40.

When using the Jap PSP the purposes of the 'X' and 'O' buttons are interchanged (on UK PSP we would press 'X' to continue, but the Jap PSP you press 'O').

This does not apply to gameplay, but when navigating through PSP settings, menus etc.

Bit weird if you are used to the PS2 etc, you instinctively press 'X' to select.

Only works with 1.5 though. It doesn't bother me much though. I got used to it with FFVII on the PS1.

If you're bothered about emulation get an N-GAGE, a GPX2 or something like that, for half the price.

Yeah mate, real clever comment :smashin:

Can't really see people being interested in carrying around a PSP and GP32\2X at the same time..

I'd have thought having it all on one handheld was the main selling point as far as people who want to get the most out of a product of this nature are concerned.

I'm also planning on purchasing a PSP from this site...they are the cheapest from what I have seen so far, and as far as I can tell, the only pitfall from ordering from Japan will be that the instruction manual will be in full Japanese. But as I found a site with a PDF version of the manual, in english, this isn't a huge problem.

The only thing I am unsettled on is the colour. Black would be nice....but white would go nicely with my iPod.

    Hi,

you have to be careful about the warranty situation. Sony UK wont touch a Jap PSP, and some stores wont even accept the PSP back if it is faulty. Sounds like Lik-Sang may be a good option, but it seems like they don't have any 1.5 PSP's left as all stock is now from Sony's warehouse. Also, all white PSPs are being shipped with 2.0 installed.

    Cheers,
    z.

    Good point about the warranty.

The firmware version doesn't hugely bother me. I have heard that 2.0 is close to being hacked, and it will soon be possible to downgrade the firmware anyway.

If you buy from an international seller, confirm the warranty situation.

Before I met my current supplier in Japan, I used to buy all my game stuff from this Hong Kong site.

    http://www.goldenshop.com.hk/AI-trad/psp/index.html

Good seller and would also reduce the custom invoice for you so you would pay less duty/vat or even none at all. I would recommend you use EMS instead of a major courier eg DHL, UPS or Fedex

Dunno if this is good or not. Sounds like it could be expensive if it breaks. Oh well...too late now.

Also noticed price of 1.5 gone from 279usd to 299. Glad I ordered when I did.
