I've been thinking about upgrading the processor in my G4, I've read a bit about it and it seems that I need to upgrade to the latest firmware. How do I do this, I cannot see a easy answer.

Has anyone else done this, the manufacturer of the processor say its easy, but how easy is it?
any help would be greatly appreciated.

There's a firmware download page on Apple's support pages where you can get hold of any patches you need, or indeed any OS updates. No idea on the CPU upgrade though.

Think sonnet are still a major processor upgrade supplier - should just be a case of removing the old card and dropping the new one in ... you should get an updater cd with the new processor with drivers if needed ... if you use the system updater it should tell you if you need any firmware updates for the existing chipset - you can also look on apple.com/support ...

you can also use mactracker to identify upgrade opportunities for you particular G4 : http://mactracker.dreamhosters.com/

It was a sonnet one I was looking at, this one

I just fitted one of those two weeks ago to a G4/800 Quicksilver.
I also fitted the 1.4GHz version to a G4/400 AGP a couple of years ago.
In my case I didn't need to do an Apple firmware upgrade but I did have to download the "Sonnet Firmware Updater.app" and run that before installing the new CPU.
It was supposed to be on the CD they supplied but it wasn't.
The printed instructions were fine, apart from telling me to fit four screws when there were only 3 holes.
