I'm thinking about building a media PC and would welcome some comments/advice/recommendations.

These are my initial thoughts/wish list.

    Functionality -
    DVD play/record
7.1 surround sound from DVD, tuners and Sky
record 2 inputs to HDD and watch 1
output to my Philips 100Hz PixelPlus crt TV
    future support for HDTV

    Connectivity
    SCART or S-Video to TV
    Sound to surround sound amp
    SCART in from Sky
    SCART in from VCR
    iLink from camcorder
    CAT5 to network

    Hardware
Cube shape case with full size PSU and possibly water cooling
AMD CPU - are dual core or 64bit any benefit? (Vista Ultimate)
    motherboard ?
1 GB memory - any more of benefit?
    250 GB SATA HDD
    Dual analogue/digital tuner card
    Graphics card ?
    DualLayer DVD RW
RF wireless keyboard with built in pointing thing
    RF remote
    Flash card reader

    TIA

    Paul

From my personal perspective, I would opt for a media PC with $ky HD.

Scart is going to be a bit tricky from a PC. You may have to get a new card for HDMI for your HDTV in the future.

I bit the bullet and bought plasma, HTPC and $ky HD all at the same time.

Yes - I'm quite happy to replace the graphics card in the future.

The PixelPlus TV gives an excellent picture and enhances non HD TV to somewhere between normal and HDTV. I dont feel HDTV is worth the extra money at the moment.

I think I can drive the TV from s-video, I'm a little more uncertain as to how I'm going get SKY and VCR in.
