Owned an HD-DVD player for a while now, and sold my XBox 360 6 months ago.
After a pretty horrible week, I feel like spoiling myself and going dual format via the PS3 route.

So, given there are no affordable Blu-Ray players readily available other than the PS3, and given that I have an HDMI amp to get the HD Audio... what's to stop me going dual format? I'll also play the occasional driving game when I'm bored!

My train leaves in 1 hour. So decision needs to be made quickly.
PS3... no PS3?

I've been tempted too but after playing with my dads (that makes me sound so young ) I'm happy I held off. It's quite noisy and the way it operates reminds you it's a games machine. I'd also like confirmation of 1.1/2.0 support before making a move.

Then I did a tot up of all the films that I want on HD DVD and I think it's going to be an expensive few months as it is. :D

Unless you want it for the games I'd wait until the new 1.1 players come out.

PS3 is currently one of the best BR players out there.

Go for it.:smashin:

Yea go get one, the more owners SONY can get then we might get some decent games and content on PSN

yeh go for it, it is a great bluray player and it plays games as well .. if you do plan on using it for bluray playback .. the PS3 remote is an essential purchase IMO

moving to bluray section :smashin:

I bought the PS3 purely as a Blu-ray player, and I haven't regretted it at all. The upscaling for SD DVDs is better than my Oppo and better than my Sharpe XD1E. Needless to say, the Blu-ray performance is stunning!
I think there's a pretty good chance it will be firmware upgradeable to profile 1.1 and beyond.
If your HDMI amp will process LPCM over HDMI, then its a no brainer I reckon.
Download the Gran Turismo HD demo if you like driving games, and pick up a copy of Happy feet - you'll have a blinding weekend
Oops, I guess your train already went.... let us know what you decided :)

With only 1 person saying I should hold off, of course I got one!

I'll be getting a PS3 > USB Dongle, and with my existing PS2 DVD remote interface I'll be controlling Blu-Ray playback with my Philips Pronto remote.

My biggest concern is that it'll sound like a jet engine (the reason I sold the 360).
Anyway I'll get it set up tonight and let you know what I think.

I went for the HMV bundle of 2 games, 2 Blu-Ray Films (Casino Royale & Black Hawk Down), and an extra wireless controller. All for £425.
Seamed a pretty good deal to me, considering the XBox 360 Elite is £300 on its own.

If I don't like the games, I guess I can always sell them on anyway.

I would be surprised if you find it noisy..... very few are reported to be...

Set it up and ENJOY !!

All of these device vary according to the state of the fans (from quiet to noisey examples), and although the 360 is certainly noiser on average, PS3 'can' be noisey as well especially if in hot environments.

I will say it's not a whiney noise, it just has to kick a lot of air out the back.

Haven't regretted getting my PS3.
Regards the noise, I have it on it's side now and noticed it seems noisier than when it was upright.... makes sense I get as it has to force more air out sideways instead of the hot air rising.
BD romote is a must.....

I definately won't be getting the BD remote unless the IR dongle idea fails to work.

Anyway, the PS3 is ok by me. Yes, its noisier than my HD-E1 when it gets going but its more 'whoosh' less 'Wrrggrh' (if you know what I mean:rotfl:) and is therefore not too bad. Nowhere near as irritating as the 360.
I'm very impressed with drive speed, and its actually significantly quicker than the E1 in power up and disc access speed.

I'm now dual format, but will continue to buy HD DVD where there's a choice entirely because the E1 is quieter.

I have 1 minor gripe with the PS3.... it won't output HDMI video signals and analogue video signals (Component, S-Video etc) simultaneously. That means I'll have to use component and let my amp upconvert it to HDMI in order to feed my Plasma and Projector at the same time.
It would have been nice to able to feed the Projector an HDMI feed without any video conversion involved.

One other thing is the games. Formula 1 is pants, and Motorstom isn't really my thing. The GT5 demo is good though and gives me an idea of what to look forward to when that is released.

I think I'll be flogging F1 and Motorstorm right away.

All in all, I'm just pleased to join the dual format gang and have a games machine with lots of potential to boot.

I use the logic3 USB IR dongle with a Pronto and it covers basic playback functions direct and even allows XMB navigation for settings etc. The only thing you can't do is switch it on or off. That said it auto powers on when you insert a disc.

Operational performance is is a different league to current standalones and Blu-ray PQ is up there with the best. It doesn't support all the audio options provided by some standalones. Noise level is subjective so only you can decide on that front.

Enjoy !

yeah i bit the bullit last week also and got the deal from Blockbuster - the same as everywhere else but gives you money of a game/bd disc and 5 free rentals.

The game im enjoying most is GT4, but the hd demo is a nice taster for the prologue version coming this year.

bd playback is great though i have nothing to compare it too, but i would advise on a remote - i haven't got one yet but the controller is a bit of a pain to use.

DVD scaling is great. I have a 360 as well with the hd dvd add on and the ps3 playback is quieter. It is a quality piece of kit i have to admit, just bring on the AAA games

How many times have you accidently knocked it and fast forwarded so far?
:D:D:D:D:D

Can confirm that the remote is a nice piece of kit

also note cool feature that inserting a disc turns on the PS3, for BD it means straight to playing the movie.

The USB > PS2 controller dongle + PS2 IR remote interface works brillantly.

The Bluetooth remote maybe good, but if you're a universal controller owner, it's a deal breaker without this IR fix.
I would not have bought a PS3 had I not known about it.
