Here is some of the latest screen shot from Thief III. The blue arrow in the last shot is for the trainer intro game.

Looks nice but lets hope that it runs smooth and you don't need an uber machine to be able to run it properly. Don't know how the 3rd person perspective will work as playing in the 1st person was one of the best and absorbing triats of the original games imo.
I hope the story runs true with the other games too and that it's not diluted to cater to the casual gamer and console markets. It was the whole package thief offered (interactivity, atmosphere and good story telling) that drew you into the game and made it so appealing and playable being one of if not the best games (apart from system shock 2 ) ever to hit the pc. I'm glad the consoles are getting this game too but only if they have been developed seperately to cater for and use the different platforms to their best.

I'm still excited about this title and hope it lives up to all my expectations. IIRC it's been in development a lot longer than DEII was so it may tick all the relevent boxes.
    :)

PC gamer are doing a exclusive sneaky preview of ‘Thief III Deadly Shadows’ next month, so they may have some updates. With the looks of them pics I do not know if to get it early or wait till later on in the year as I’m hoping to upgrade some of my components as they are getting up to 3 years old.

I hope they make a better job of this than Deus ex 2. Does it use the same engine?

After hearing that a sequel to the greatest game of all time - Deus ex was being released, I remember punching my fist in the air and exclaiming YES - there is a GOD!
However, on the games release, I'm glad there were no sharp objects around as my acute disapointment in the games 'consoley' revision left me in a bit of a rage - what a let down!
On hearing that the second greatest game of all time - Thief - was getting the sequel treatment, I was initially pleased, but after the screw up with deus ex, was a bit more cautious but seeing the screenshots has really buoyed me up.
However, looking good does not necessarily mean that its going to play as good so just in case it turns out to be a case of bad sequelitis, I'v decided to give the origional thief a spin again but now find that it does'nt work with windows 2000 - has anyone out there managed to get it running or am I going to have to change operating systems in order to play it?

So you think Thief II is better than Thief.:D

I have had no trouble on XP loading it, have you downloaded the latest patch for Thief and run it which I think is for plain version is here http://www.bluesnews.com/files/thief/patches/thiefpatch.shtml which is 1.33 I’m running 1,37 but I’m on Gold?
If not go to the Start icon and see if Run is shown, if so enter in the box
    X:\setup.exe –LGNTFORCE
where X is the drive with your install disc.

Are you still enjoying that track from Fandango?

sorry - my mistake, I bought the gold premier collection edition of thief some years back which at one stage took over my life, I completely forgot that there's already a thief 2 which was more of the same so I did'nt buy it.
The sequel I'm refering to is the current one in production - number 3!
    P.S the soundtrack (fandango) rocks!

I'v just gotten Thief Gold working for the first time in over a year(thanks for the link garrett) and old as it is, its a thing of beauty!
No game today (with the possible exclusion of thief 3?) has that magic ingredient which current titles lack - atmosphere by the bucketload - worra game!

Great to here you got it going. I have this minute finished the casino scenario of now after the sword. I’m playing them all again on expert but if you are not please do at least on the first time you go to the cathedral there is a lot more areas open up to you.

By the way when you said Thief was the second best game I thought you had played Thief II, although I think the first one is the best one ever myself.

Why do you not pick up Thief II it is only £4.99 or 3 for £10. And you get to meet up with an old friend from the original.

Along with Garrett, Thief is my fave game, with Deus Ex a close 2nd.

You know its good when you get so excited playing it that you have to show the (disinterested) wife the pleasures of firing off arrows and socking blokes over the noggin with the blackjack!

Howver, will need to upgrade the 2 year old Geforce 3 card and Athlon XP1600+ on purchase of the new sequel.

    That's scary!!
It's about time we both upgraded, although I feel I may have to smuggle them under the wife's radar or she'll give me ear-ache of the 'you don't really need that do you - we need the money for the house/baby' sort!!

I reckon £300 should do for new CPU/Gfx card, but I'll wait till summer.

    My ALL time top 5?

    1 - Deus Ex
    2 - System Shock 2
    3 - Half Life
    4 - Thief
    5 - Tie Fighter

One disturbing fact about these and other classic titles is this - they're all oldies - have we stopped producing classics?

I missed System Shock 2 and on looking it up see that it is from the makers of Thief so I will have to search out a copy of it.

Garrett - if you'v not yet tried System shock 2, your in for one hell of a treat - even so many years after its release, I play it on a regular basis - indeed, I'v only just finished playing it last tuesday and can confidentally tell you this - the thief series may reek of atmosphere and tension but SS2 will TRUELY scare you - I kid you not, indeed, its the creepiest game I'v EVER played and I'v been into games from the very depths of time (1979!)
There are quite a few mods available, the best being called 'rebirth' which soups up the graphics big time and adds some really nice effects.
You may have a problem getting to install it to xp or w2k but you can write a short piece of code (more or less the same as with thief) which will get it up and running.
Check it out - you won't regret it!

One of the most atmospheric and scary games you'll ever play. I've not looked at it recently so I don't know how it's faired by todays standards. It may look dated now but iirc there is a mod around that improves the textures etc to improve the graphics.
If you can't find a copy let me know and I'll try and dig mine out:thumbsup:

So this thread does not go too far off Topic I suggest you only enter your top 5 if it contains one of the Thief games. Is that all right Mods?

    That was posted 2001

    Now my Top 5 are
    (1) Thief Gold
    (2/3) Thief II/Deus Ex
    (4) DIABLO2+EXPANSION SET
    (5) Civilisation II (not got round to III yet). Just doing a search and found Greg Hook was asking about Civilisation III I see it is out next month for £9.99.

I have System Shock 2 but never really got round to playing it properly...always got stuck and gave up. Think I should try again?

Not having a great deal of free time these days what with a 10 month son crawling around I have to prioritise my gaming/dvd watching very carefully!! So many games, so little time!!

Although I enjoy fragfests, I prefer a more thoughtful, adventurous, slower kind of experience that will emerse me into the world a bit more, hence my love of Thief.

My brain isn't quick enough to cope with the speed of the Quake 3 online guys anyway!

Forgot to mention Half-Life as No.3 fave as well. Jedi Knight 2 was great too.

I think it has been delayed badly so far, PC Gamer was quoting it for Christmas 2002 back in a June 2002 issue.
I just hope they have made a good job of it, for which I rather wait.

I got PC Gamer the other day with a 4 page spread on Thief III Deadly Shadows and it sounded better than I first heard with some of the changes. They are hoping to review it further with a more up to date coding and there is mention of a demo on the cover disc next month.

On a negative note, I'm pretty sure that your gonna need a major upgrade to play this babe - does anyone have system specs yet? I just hope my rig (w2k, amd 2.4, ati 9800 pro, 512 meg) is up to the job cos I'm as skint as a pig at the moment.

Also there is a better review but not on the finished game go here.

Just read that Randy Smith (Lead Designer) has left due to irreconciable differences. I hope this isn't due to Eidos wanting to put a publishers stamp on the project as this may not bode well if one of the original designers isn't happy with the final polishing the game is getting
Have to wait and see but I hope that this isn't as bad a sign as I fear

Have to admit to being disapointed by the reviews skinny on the gfx as they look pretty spectacular in the multitude of screenshots released recently - judging by the 'chopiness' of the gfx, a big chunky graphics card looks to be the way to go so I hope my 9800 pro is up to the job.
On the other hand, the reviewers slavering over the sound effects and dialogue means that its gonna sound real swish on a decent 5.1 setup so it looks like I'll be upgrading my speaker setup to take advantage of this.
Despite all the flaws, I'll definitley be amongst the first in the queue to pick up a copy.
