Just seen this over at Xbox Scene. There is a video on there of PGR3 being run from a dvdr. The hack has not been released (yet) by the group responsible. But it's beginning to look like Micro$oft's Titanic now.

Well I for one won't be hacking/chipping or whatever this time. I've played pirate games for years, back as far as the snes, you end up with dozens if not hundreds of games that you don't play because you are constantly getting new games. I've spent more hours and had more fun playing games since getting the 360 than I have for a very, very long time. Even if a hack would enable divx playback ( my main bugbear ) I still wouldn't do it, its not that inconvenient to re-encode.

hmmm this doesn't prove anything, we don't see the back of the telly in the video, they could have another xbox 360 plugged in the back via a scart or something... very easy to do. This just proves someone can take the lid of a 360 and put a DVD-r in.

    Not convienced yet

I totally agree. If anything I'll get a second 360 which will be offline which I'll use to test the games before I buy them, but any time I spend with a game I want to be on the real thing so i can compare my stats with others online.

    Its fake !!!!!!!!!!!

The sony TV in the video clip has a 2nd 360 connected to it via the REAR SCART connections.

Its wont last long as the will be a LIVE update soon that will kill it !

Trouble with anyone hacking the 360 is that MS have the ability to upgrade the O\S of the console as soon as you either log into LIVE, or buy a new game.

The PSP was hacked pretty quickly, but Sony are usually only a couple of weeks behind with a firmware upgrade that is needed if you want to run the latest games (see GTA).

I think console manufacturers are becoming wise to chipping, and hacking, consoles.. Many chipped the XBox just for the media centre stuff, and they've included this on the 360. Many hacked the PSP for the web browser, so Sony included one on the 2.0 update. If you're just hacking to play pirate games, quite frankly I don't care is MS release a patch that turns your console into a very expensive paperweight. They're perfectly at liberty to do so, IMO. :lesson:

So it's fake and M$ will kill it anyway? That makes a lot of sense.

And how can a Live update kill a firmware-hacked dvd drive?

I doubt it'll be released...... Too risky.

Its not even a good hack anyway, its only good for pirating. No way this would run homebrew {XBMC}. Plus MS have intergrated live into the 360 so much so that you'd be missing out so much just to save yourself some bucks. No doubt MS will be able to reflash your drive bios anyway.

Another thing why do people write M$?

i would like to see xbmc on the 360 though, not everyone wants the hack for the games, xbox 360's media playback is a bit limited in formats etc

That comment is so true the fun factor is taken out of games, the waiting then rushing home to play your new game. I hope piracy will not play a big part in the 360 life, anyway will probably mess your system up if you start messing with it plus I for one would not want to be banned off live.

If it's just the dvd drive that has been hacked to make the xbox think it's the real disc will this not mean they will work on live?

It would work on live because it thinks its retail disc.

This is a step in right direction for XB360 hacking community next they may beable to get games on to hard drive.

Why people moaning and saying its fake normally xbox-scene doesn't fall for fakes they do research first its also a genuine group that has done this.

This hack can be fixed with an MS update but it can be easily be re-hacked as the firmware is not signed.

Only problem at the moment is getting the hacked firmware to the DVD drive which cannot be done via a "software on disk" update, therefore the only way is to remove the drive and then the firmware chip from inside the drive and hard flashing the chip.

This is the first real hack for the 360 but it looks like you will have to send the unit away for the new firmware that could only last a few weeks until Ms update the drive, then you will have to send it away again, unless of course they come up with something better.

From my understanding this will only allow straight backups to work. I just really hope discs with altered game files cant be used - rampant cheating on live would be the end of it...

pure 1:1 at the minute... any modification will invalidate the signature.

this aint gonna allow anything other than 1:1's

I always backed up my old PS2 games to a hard drive as I got fed up with my the disks getting scratched (my little boy plays it also).

The new dics being used for current 360 games (combined with the RPM of the disks) mean that I have had three crack already (COD twice PGR once).

So being able to back up disks would be something I may consider if it was possible.

I don't know any stores that allow you to return opened games.

never under estimate the abilities of a hacker. As for the the PSP firmware upgrade requirements to thwart newer games from working. Its now possible to play GTA, crash team racing etc..... on a 1.5 PSP :) Microshaft and $ony are employing the wrong people

Or maybe its a way of rewarding all the early adopters :rotfl:

you're right, all but the biggest game store in the uk that is. Game have been giving money back for opened games up to 10 days for as long as i can remember.

I've never bought pirate games, but you have to apreciate the hacking scene for what it does. Look at how it turned the xbox into a real hidef media centre (something which i'm sure influenced the current features of the 360). I'll be very interested to see what the hackers come up with beside the obvious play dvdr games. What if a hacker comes up with a way to playback hidef movies without windows mce or off a dvd? What if a hacker does a better job of emulating xbox games than M$? What if hackers allow the 360 to emulate other cd/dvd based console games (ps1,ps2,dc, saturn etc)?

Ok so some of the what ifs seem far fetched but who knows? Fair enough for most of us the 360 is too new and too precious to hack right now but in a year or two we may be more adventurous/reckless. You only have to see what hacking has done for the xbox and psp scene to see its more than just piracy.

game, woolworths, blockbusters, whsmiths ( i think) all allow you to return games if you say you don't like them.

None of the shops allow pc game returns though, also alot of games don't come sealed anyway so theres no way they can know. Not sure about 360games but the majority of ps2/xbox games i bought were never sealed neither were any of my mates ones
