It seems as though most posters here recommend Panasonic, Pioneer, or Hitachi. Anyone got a good word to say for NEC, JVC, Eizo, Fujitsu, LG, Philips, Sony, Sanyo, Sharp, Thomson, Dream Vision, Daewoo, Loewe, Medion, Relisys or Toshiba ...?

    Hi NicolasB,
I have seen the new Fujitsu's it action and the picture quality is very good. The only problem ( which is a major one) is that the Fujitsu panels are Alis panels so everything is interlaced wether you want it or not, no matter if you put a progressive signal in, the panel changes into interlaced.
Its a real pity cause I really liked these screens.Oh well never mind !

Being interlaced isn't as bad as you might think, it does increase percieved resolution. A high resolution non interlaced display would be better, but there's no such Plasma yet...

    Hi Cybersoga,

I dont see what you mean.

    Consider a panel with a resolution of 1024 x 768 progressive, compared to 1024 x 1024 Interlaced.

That means every frame refresh (depending on rate, either 60th or 50th second) a panel such as described is displaying 768 Vertical lines of resolution, compared to 512 lines of vertical resolution that the interlaced panel is displaying, obviously both displaying 1024 lines horizontal resolution.

There are a number of 1024 x 768 progressive panels available.

I saw the Daewoo in Dixons the other day.

Considering that it was likely badly set up and with a freebie cable, it was pretty impressive picture for the price of £2500 including tuner box and speakers.

Point on the daewoo taken but 2.5K buys a whole lot of better stuff (not plasma but very good CRT (the best) and an awsome RP TV PS Plasma are great but the performance of the cheaper sets will be surpassed much faster than the expensive ones!!!
Fujitsu HHA is the best plasma picture on a 42 I have (Beovision 5 excluded) and that was put against a Panny PW5 driven from a HK DVD 25 via component......The fujitsu was being fed a tosh SD125 via a 5m scart and not even a good one!!!!!!!

I'll put a vote in for the NEC (42VP4S) in that list - very nice picture, provided you don't mind a 853 x 480 display, which I know you're not happy about.

My vote also goes to the NEC VP4, yes not high res, but otherwise truly excellent, yes for HC, great inputs, composite, svid, 1xyuv, 1x 5-BNC RGBHV or YUV, d-sub, DVI, 3100:1 contrast, 2 or 3 yr warranty, swap out variety. Seen them in action, better than PW5 beside it. I'd love to see it beside a PW6.

The 50" Fujis are good value, true 16:9, again good inputs and good features on the menus, like setting a default video input to display 1st. Good remote too.

Who beat you to Bagpuss then?

Pioneer and Panasonic were the first to get half decent video processing into their displays and have continued to develop this aspect of their products whilst quite a few of the other brands you mention use older (less costly) technology or spend more cash concentrating on the PC Graphics abilities of their products or looking for lower cost production techniques.

Do also keep in mind that when you look under the skin of some models from Toshiba, Fujitsu, NEC, Hitachi, Sharp etc - you find a fair bit of Pioneer and Panasonic produced parts are in use. (see mike1's reply - his Fujitsu P50XHA10 is a Panasonic panel with Fujitsu add ons).

Its worth giving the alternatives a look see but you may find like many before you that you end up back at Pioneer. Panasonic or Fujitsu (plus Toshiba or Hitachi clones) - me I tend to favour mostly the Pioneer and Panasonic for video quality.

    Best regards

    Joe
