Finally they are releasing a decent version of this great filim on DVD (there was a version released in the States about 3 years ago but it was pan and scan and pro-logic only).

It is due for release in the States on April 2nd and will include anamorphic widescreen (mastered from a high definition transfer), three behind-the-scenes featurettes, deleted scenes, a gag reel with introduction by director Bryan Singer, audio commentary with Singer and writer Christopher McQuarrie, a second commentary with composer and editor John Ottman, trailers, TV spots and original advertising materials.

There is also word of it being released in the UK on April 29th for all those with region 2 only machines, no word on the extras though.

I have a R1 version of this film in Widescreen with a commentary track by the Director and the Writer. Had it for a few years now.

Only thing missing from this one and the new one that's due for release is the documentary.

Don't think I'll be buying it again just for that :)

    Isn't the original non-anamorphic?

    Cheers,

Used to have the original, (it was w/s letterbox btw) sold it on e-bay when the first rumours of a SE surfaced back last summer. Think I got around £10 for it.

Wasn't Kaiser Soze just a myth? Or was it Kevin Spacey?

Yes the version I have isn't anamorphic, but what's the point buying another version just to get an anamorphic picture?

I'm quite happy with the version I have. Looks good, sounds good and has the very good Directory/Writer commentary.

As for mjn who doesn't rate the movie ????
What planet are you from m8 :) :D

Maybe, but the picture I get is fine by me.
Why spend hard earned cash on another version of movie that I already have and I'm happy with?

thats right, I don't rate it!!!

I remember at the time 94?, everybody i knew was going on about it, saying how good it was etc. Well i got it out on video, and after 30 minutes, i was bored out of my brain!!

So turned it off, and took it back........i also did the same with Crash, which was awful aswell!!

    I'm not asking you to.

You corrected a previous poster by saying that the R1 release was widescreen rather than P&S, and that the only difference between this and the new one is the documentary. I simply queried whether there was also another difference: letterbox vs anamorphic. Just providing more factual information to the thread.

I make no suggestions as to whether you should buy the new version or not, since it is entirely a personal decision as to whether the benefits are worth the cost.

    Cheers,
    Liam

I'll be buying this - in fact I sold my original to get the MGM keepcase version, then I sold that about 18 months ago when I heard that the new anamorphic spec ed would follow.

Anamorphic certainly makes a difference on my 56 inch widescreen set.

BTW - the commentary is excellent - especially if you want to find out the true identity of KS!

I've got the special edition video box set which came with two tapes, just before the advent of DVD. One had the film and the other had the film with the commentary soundtrack. I think it may also have had a couple of other 'extras' as well, but can't remember exactly.

One of the finest films ever IMHO, and about time it had the treatment it deserves. :)

I've had the R1 version for a while and I'll definitly be getting the special edition. This is just the kind of film that deserves extras and I cant wait to see more, plus an anamorphic transer is long overdue..... Will the new version have a 5.1 track or will we have to make to do with the Pro-Logic version?

I am sure this will have a 5.1 soundtrack, but as soon as I find out more about this release I will post it here

Now if only they give the Shawshank Redemption the same kind of treatment............

My R1 copy of Shawshank Redemption is anamorphic and is in DD5.1...

...there isn't much in the way of extras on it though, but a about £9.60p at the time I couldn't really complain...

My copy is the original release, with only a P&S picture and stereo sound. I prefer my VHS copy - it's widescreen with Dolby surround! You're right. Another classic in dire need of the SE treatment! That and Goodfellas, which I think is actually in the pipeline (finally!)
