    Dear all

I've lost my copy of The Rock and I'm just looking round to replace it. As far as I can see there's the - R1/R2 2 Disk Special Editions and the R1 Criterion Edition. The R1 / R2 I can get for 7.99, but the Criterion is 22.99. Anyone got the criterion edition - is it that much better than the bog standard special edition?

    Cheers

They are exactly the same mate...apart from the price anyway!! The R2 dosen't advertise dts sound on the cover. To get to it, go into the language menu and it's there - if you like that sort of thing...

Not the same, i had that "theyre the same" thing thrown at me with Armageddon i tested both and found the Criterion version had better sound quality, more fuller bass and livelier surrounds.

The DTS soundtrack is superb, and the PQ is brilliant.

I am pretty sure that UK 2 disc version even has the word Criterion on the spine

The sound on region 2 version won't be the same if it follows the lead set by Armageddon which also had the Criterion spine, the region 2 sound had weaker bass and thinner sound and less detail.

Thanks all for your replies. I know it's quite sad really, but I actually really do like this movie, so I've plumped for the Criterion one from Movietyme - as an 'experiment in to more expensive DVDs' - and as it's Christmas too :). Hope it's worth it

    Thanks again

    Region 2 was re-classified UNCUT.

The James Ferman era which saw a lot of films cut is over and many film's are now re-classified and its possible if Warner's attempted to re-classify The Matrix it too would be passed Uncut.

My mate has the Criterion (cost £20) and I have the R2 2 disc set (picked up for £6). There is no difference at all in content or in the sound department (unless you can detect PAL speed-up).

And don't be ashamed to like this film, it's one of the best action movies ever made.

Darth i think ur find one has 384kb/s audio while the Criterion has 448kb/s, thats if they follow on with what they did with Armageddon and it isn't just speed up, there are other problems associated with region 2.

Ok so it has DTS DTS goes lower in the bass department ask urself this, if the pitch is 4% higher u WILL notice this if the bassline is 4% higher and ur setup is good.

I agree with the previous comments.
Is it not like playing an MP3 CD and a commercial music CD on an able DVD player.
You certainly will not notice the difference between the 2 on a normal TV with even a basic 5.1 set up - even if the MP3 is rated at 128Kbps.

The better and more refined equipment you have the more you should in theory notice it.

Therefore to say (to the guy who said it was the same) there is NO difference - on what basis is his understanding ?

Although I would agree most people's standard (smallish !) set up would not notice it !
