It's wierd, my 'favorites' link to DVD File kept coming up as last updated 26/Jan. Eventually got through tonite to find 'The Rock' information. I've put in a pre-order with Amazon, but I'm waiting for Play to come up with a price. BTW, did a search on Movietyme for the disc with no joy, did you phone or what to get a quote?

    Can't wait though...

The Rock Criterion LD is not DTS, but does have a fantastic AC3 soundtrack.
The picture is also pretty good...one of the better LD's.

I for one am looking forward to replacing my Criterion LD with the DVD though as it has one major drawback...it is spraed over five sides!!!
So it is a bit of a pain watching it and having to get up to change the disc three times.

I have noticed that Michael Bay's advert 'Got Milk?' is missing from the DVD release though?

three times, i assume it is CAV, but do you not mean two times, the change to disc two the the change to disc three.

will you be selling your criterion copy then? ;(

i'm not sure a dts DVD track will be able to rival an AC3 Ld track unless its dts-es or something. What aspect ratio is your LD presented in. I really like 1.85:1 laserdiscs, but find 2.35:1 laserdiscs can get a bit noisy.

Yep..two times, sorry I also counted putting the first disc in..lol

Nah I wont be selling it even when I get the DVD version....it looks MUCH too nice to sell. That is one area where the DVD will DEFINITLY not be as good as the LD, the packaging is so nice. It is in box that opens out with the three discs and a big fold out sheet with info about the film on it.
It cost me just over £100 when I bought it, but not long after that I saw places selling it off for about £40!

I am sure the DTS track on the DVD WILL be good, but as you say it will have it's work cut out trying to better the AC3 track on the LD.

The LD is in 2.35:1 and is not that bad a transfer. I have seen better LD's, but I have seen a LOT worse too.

Dunc, you could try doing what I'm doing. I've got a pre-order in for The Rock (Crit) - with Amazon as it happens, a sort of 'banker' - but I'm waiting for Play to announce a price.

A few weeks back Play were not listing the SE of JFK, then lo and behold about 10 days before it's street date it's up for grabs.

Hold out for Play, but get a banker in too, you can always cancel.

Sorry Alvb....I used to have the standard NTSC LD of the Rock before I got the Criterion.

If it is any consolation at least you wont have to get up to change the disc as many times as I do..lol

Wondered when Duncan would come in on this one...I remember the MANY conversations we have had regarding The Rock and how it is Duncans favourite film.

If you havn't allready seen them, the outakes will be eye opening...they are some of the most intense I have ever seen....Ed Harris is a TRUE proffesional and these outakes show this!

watched the rock tonight and was blown away by the audio, as i'm sure were my neighbours, but who cares, i have to put up with his son's trance music or whatever sh*t he plays on his 'decks'

picture was also amazingly good for a 2.35:1 laserdisc, probably the best i have ever seen.

i think even a dts dvd would have a hard time beating the audio on the laserdisc.

intense outtakes, got the outtakes from 'from dusk till dawn'

ouch, did you hear the noise as george clooney smacked quentin tarantino in the face with the chair?

that must have broken his nose!

The shower room scene does indeed proove what you were saying about ED HARRIS, the "Were up here, your down there" bit is fantastic and everytime I demo a new piece of equipment this is one scene I ALWAYS use.

It has everything, speach, music and well steered gun fire.

    Are MOVIETYME any good ?

I've never ordered from anyone else. Generally I haven't put my pre-orders in that early, but I've always had my disks promptly. Sometimes they could give you a bit more information but they are available on the phone so you can discuss anything. I took umbrage once at a silly issue but I really recommend them. I've never been charged before a disc is sent. They aren't always the cheapest, but, let's face it, you (Duncan) and I (who shares your passion for the Rock) would pay almost any price for the Criterion release.

However, can't find that pre-order anywhere on their site. I'll mail them and see.

I think PeteH/Confucius first mentioned the criterion release some months ago on this forum, and I've been waiting...

Yeah, Movietyme are superb - the best in my opinion, I always get new release 1-2 weeks early and the prices are generally very good. I'm not sure about £25 for The Rock though? I think I'll hang on and see if Play come up with anything around the £18 mark [IMG]

BTW, the details of The Rock are at the bottom of the front page.... [IMG]

i doubt the price will be much lower if its a criterion edition, take armageddon criterion for example, i've seen that advertised for about £30
