Just watched this stunner on 46" RPTV with DTS. Quite simply this is the now most visually impressive DVD in my collection.

I remember watching my previous "flipper" on my old 36" 100Hz Panasonic, and was impressed with the quality then. But this Criterion version is in a different league !.

What methods have they used in the transfer?, or is the picture quality purely down to Anamorphic/Non-Anamorphic?.

Thanks Jenz, that review answers all my questions.

Are you aware of any other titles using this type of transfer ?

Just heard from my wife that my copy arrived this morning (Movietyme). That moment when you first spin up an eagerly awaited disk is great. Popped in here to see if anyone had any opinions and read Jenz's review with trepidation - The Rock is one of my all time favourites and I'd hate for it to have been a disappointing addition to the Criterion stable.

No fear tho, if its half as good as you say I'll be having a great evening. The copy I had previously was an _awful_ R1 that I bought for a tenner from www.dvdmod.com (i think associated with techtronics?) as a "production overrun" in a cd case without cover. Average bitrate 2mb/s! Fuzzy foreheads, artefacts galore.

Now I just need a Criterion Con Air - I bought a £10 copy of that as well!

Is it just me or is £35 too expensive for a DVD!

    I think it's <bleep> disgusting! [IMG]

There's no shortage of more impressively transferred and extras laden discs around at half that price!

Just coz it's got 'criterion' written on it. [IMG]

True, but not by much. Still a massive rip off whichever way you cut it as far as I'm concerned. It would have to be my favourite film of all time before I'd fork out that much for a disc, and even then I'd think twice about it!

I've seen it for @ £25 - £10 less; and let's face it, nobody's being forced to buy it.

    So where was that? [IMG]

I haven't seen it for less than £30. At £25 I *might* think about it, but it'd still be a fiver more than I've ever paid for a disc before.

Got mine from DC-DVD, under £25 pre-ordered, also Ringos are doing it for £25.

"There's no shortage of more impressively transferred and extras laden discs around at half that price!"

Have to disagree, I have over 150 DVD's and this title is the best transfer, absolutely no doubt. Puts my R1 Fifth Element to shame.

I do agree though that some suppliers are taking the **** by asking £35 for the title.

    Alright, you win! [IMG]

Just been to Movietyme and ordered it for £24.99. Must admit I didn't really look too hard for a decent price as I'd seen it at £30+ in a couple of places so just assumed everywhere would be about the same. Play are doing it for about £34 which is unusual for them, and so this is the first time I've used a different supplier.

"There's no shortage of more impressively transferred and extras laden discs around at half that price!"

Have to disagree, I have over 150 DVD's and this title is the best transfer, absolutely no doubt.

Again, my mistake. Not having seen the version playing I obviously can't comment on the transfer, and that comment was more aimed at the extras. I just worded it badly in the rush! Sorry guys. [IMG]

But I do think that on the whole we do get a bit ripped off with the price of criterion discs. This'll be my first one so I don't know just how good they generally are, but I hope it's good enough to justify paying about £10 over the odds!

Looking forward to getting it now though! [IMG]

I have to agree that this is the best disc in my collection for film transfer. I paid £25 at MT.

I haven't seen it all yet - Mrs. Mattie insisted on seeing Ally McBeal last night - but I started the outtakes with my kids in the room - until Ed Harris started swearing his head off!

Ordered mine from Movietyme last wednesday (£24.99), still waiting for it to arrive.
Its the first time I have used them. Is there a way of checking if its been dispatched, the way you can with Play247.
I know its not supposed to be out until the 13th but I was under the impression the rock was shipping within 24 hours. Do they usually take this long?

I ordered it from Movietyme ages ago, but they seem to be taking their tyme sending it out. I've now ordered 3 movies from them so far.

    1) Jurassic Park DTS - turned up 2 weeks after everyone got theirs.

    2) Toy Story Toy Box - 3 weeks and no DVD, in the end it seemed to got lost in the post. So they sent another one which arrived a few days later.

    3) Rock SE 2 Disc - Still has not been despatched, even though everyone else's has.

It looks like i learned now that Movietyme and I dont mix and i will NEVER order from them again. Looks like its back Disc Emporium which never failed me or Future Entertainment if i want to save a few quid and wait 3 days extra [IMG]

Sorry Movietyme but you dont seem to like me do you.

Yep, but at 5 ish. Tuesday was a one-off pilot-type special at 9pm... She loved it (Mind you, she can't see the transfer difference between our old copy of The Rock and the Criterion one - what we've seen of it)

If you had read the thread in detail, you could have saved yourself a tenner !.

Also, this thread is turning into a supplier performance thread, how about a bit more on the movie itself?.

Now that I,ve watched the second disc, I am not that impressed with the extras. I mean couldn't they have done the do's & dont's of gunplay during a lunch break or something?, and what was that "smug naughty schoolboy" look all about with the guy doing the demos ?.
The 2 items I did enjoy were the underwater filming and the outtakes with Ed Harris. the director must have been sh*tting himself during those takes.

Anyone heard the rumour that a sequel to The Rock might be in the pipeline ?

I did. [IMG] £35 at most places, I got it for £25 at Movietyme, like most others seem to have done.

Can't comment on the disc right now coz it's at home and I'm at work coz my DVD addiction needs to be financed! [IMG]

Get to go home in 6 hours though...
