hi, kind of a weird thread but i bought the original Region 2 of The Replacement Killers on dvd for around 4 quid which i thought was a bargain until i played the dvd! the menu quality is poor (dull colour etc) and the screen size is almost pathetic (1:2.35!), i like this film a lot and have wanted it on dvd cheap for sometime, i think ill be getting the collectors edition instead but does anyone know where i can find it cheap? cheapest ive seen is 7.99 on play.com.

maybe you just need to alter your pc's dvd software settings?

yeah I love this film, it's a pity it doesn't get the superbit treatment, I so want this with DTS

It can be either 2.35:1 or 1:2.35. It is the same screen ratio. I have been told technically, 1:2.35 is the correct way round when orginally used in this country. The U.S. uses it the other way and has become the norm of saying it.

I have the re-released SE of replacement killers and it states 2.35:1 on the cover. Have you got the barebones first release?

I also have the special edition, somewhere, but I don't remember anything about it being particularly special in fact I would have categorised it as a bare bones release also... Well just about bare bones anyway

I just had a look and it is a collectors edition not a SE.

It has a fair amount of extras but nothing really interesting so it might as well have been bare bones. It has two featurettes, deleted scenes, alternative ending, commentary and trailer.

i think it came out at a similar time that new versions of scream, scream 2, con air, the rock and face-off all came out, actually with some extras and anamorphic widescreen as it has a similar "new bonus footage" sticker on the box. So it's only special in the sense that they're a little bit more special than the original bare-bones releases, but nothing spectacular in today's days of 3 or 4 disc special editions.

A question for the original poster, when you said the screen size is pathetic, what did you mean exactly? 2.35:1 is about the widest widescreen movies go, apart from a few exceptions, but if you have a 4:3 TV it can be almost unwatchable as the borders take up as much space as the movie does. Also if it's non anamorphic, you may get side borders as well on a widescreen TV, or a really poor quality stretched image.
comparison of all versions of this movie here

i was watching the dvd on my pc and usually plays other films fine, im guessing its smaller because its non anamorphic, ill probably pick up the collectors edition as it is anamorphic.

I had one of the first releases of this movie it came in one of the super jewel cases and it was 2.35 anamorphic the only SF's it had was cast bio's. Must really be your PC DVD Player.
The PQ wasn't bad. Nothing over the top, but not bad.

I was thinking the same thing. Didn't realise it had been re released.

Yes. I have had the collectors edition for a couple of years now.
