I went to see 'The Proposition' at CineWorld in Hull on Wednesday night and found that they had installed a digital projector in Screen 9 a week previously. The film was great but my first experience of a big-screen digital projector wasn't too positive. The picture was often covered (particularly on landscape shots) with fairly obvious vertical banding and about 20 minutes the picture froze completely. It took them around 10 minutes to sort this out and in all my cinema-going years it was the first time I've experienced this kind of thing happening.

Still, banding aside, the picture was definitely a lot better than regular film.

Film is still the last bastion against the final onslaught of digital takeover. I hope it stands aslong as possible, its a marvellous, magical thing.
