I know high street stores are a joke, but they are stores, and they are on the high street. I popped in today to have a look at the PW7 in action. I was fairly impressed, the image was a DVD from a shared RGB source displaying on a few screens at once, and it looked very nice indeed. good tone, good movement. all in all, a very good screen. (even though it was jurassic park 3 in a fairly dark moment) I looked at what settings it was set to and it was all in all very nice. The funny bit comes to the inevitable approach from the "salesman" Which I will roughly recreate for you as follows. Salesman: Y'awright there? Me: yes thanks, I'm just looking at this plasma panel. What input is it using right now? Salesman: Well it's just DVD through SCART. (sounds half decent - could be lucky here) Me: ah good - just checking. Salesman: Are you in the market for a plasma? Me: Well yes, I have been looking for a while. being swayed towards the PW7 after reading a lot about it. Salesman: So how soon as you to making a decision on buying one? Me: As soon as I decide, I'll buy. I just need to make sure I ma buying the right screen for my needs. Salesman: well the PW7 isn't a TV as such, it doesn't have an speakers or tuner so you need those seperate. Me: Well I am using Sky+ for a tuner and a home theatre kit for audio so that's not an issue. Salesman: (Trying to shepherd me to the vierra) The Vierra has a built in tuner and speakers and stand. Me: And like I said, I don't need speakers or a tuner. Salesman: oh aye, you'll get those frae your sky eh? Me: (getting bored now) Like I was saying, I've pretty much decided on the PW7, I just needed to see it in the flesh so to speak before I bought it. So how much are you selling it for? Salesman: well uh.... we've not really got to deciding on a store price we're kind of pushing the vierra a lot y'know... I'll uh.. go see my manager and see what he says.....*toddles off* Moments later he arrives back Salesman: Well the panel on it's own is going to be just under £2500 - £2499 to be precise. I raise a big smirk at him Me: Two thousand... five hundred... on it's own? Salesman: Aye... Two, five. Me: Have you any idea how much these things retail for elsewhere? Salesman: uh no? Me: £1654 including free board and delivery Salesman: *sounding triumphant* Where's that then? Me: AV sales dot co dot uk Salesman: Ahhh well y'see we won't compete with online sellers, because we just can't. Y'see we buy these in at £1800 so I don't know how anyone can sell them for less - they must be cutting their profits fairly close to the bone. Me: Yes, but you're £1000 more expensive pre delivery! Salesman: Well we'll pricematch them like for like providing they provide the same service as we do. Me: Well the provide the same screen, same warranty and delivery, so it is the same product Salesman: I mean like advisers n stuff. Me: Oh well - thanks anyway. buhbuy! Honestly, it bloody amazes me how bad high street retail has become. What they are doing is a breach of the sale of goods act. They are selling a product at any price they see fit to screw a customer over at without displaying an actual price in store. So in summary... Don't buy from panasonic shop.... ever. May the laughing and shared experiences of high street retail commence.
