Four years ago in australia I watched Beijing open their Olympics and thought it would not be bettered. After tonight I think it was at least equalled. For a brief moment in this austerity riven nation I can feel a little pride. We done good...!

Me too, as proud as punch.

The part when the 5 rings came together was superb . Everyone in the room stood up and applauded. Just sublime..!

Wow. That flame lighting was brilliant.. !

Oh ****. Paul
McCartney

Couldn't they get somebody that can sing !!!!

I almost feel like I missed out on something:)

2 highlights for me were the 4 Olympic rings coming together and mr bean s chariots of fire . A surprisingly excellent start to the Olympics, just hope it can be kept up. Just wow, we've still got it despite the recession... !

McCartney needs to stop being wheeled out for these events. He can't sing!

Apart from that I thought the opening ceremony was brilliant. I really enjoyed the part about the industrial revolution and the forging of the olympic rings.

Yeah it's a bit of a cliche that when it comes to a major event in the UK, by default we get Macca on stage!

The first two parts were pretty good, the rap music/dating section was a bit bizzare though, was that some sort of London thing? I didn't even recognise whatever the sitcom was supposed to be.

I thought the mr bean thing was in rather bad taste though, coming first after cheating and tripping someone up? He's really could have come up with something more appropriate for that (Mr Bean meets Baldric maybe?)

The Cauldron and the picture from the ISS at the end were excellent though.

And the pink and blue germans, that was unexpected. The wellies and umbrellas from one of the teams was a nice touch though.

Danny Boyle: 'Bold, brilliant, bonkers, British'
Just about sums it up.
Totally entertaining and brought a lump to my throat on a number of occasions.

The Americans seem to be slightly confused it by it all. My US twitter timeline is awash with people having no idea what's going on (delayed their broadcast until 00.30 our time). I struggled at times so must be tough if you've got little idea of our culture.

Nothing new there then (struggling with other cultures).

judging by the feed of American twitter users I'm seeing, under half seem to get the eccentricity of it and are enjoying it while the majority are writing stuff like "What is this ****** ****?! fail Brits fail!" or "Dude this **** it weird!"

I've just had one ranting that he's turning it off because of the political statements being made about our socialist healthcare system and the Olympics should be free of political messages! :D

lol, I'm guessing he also boycotts the Olympics in their entirety with their political message of global solidarity and peace? :D

My favourite bit:

The digital age bit with phone message references, and the tv snippets was *****,then dizzee rascal came on and it all got really, really dire...What a racket...
Celebrating tv shows and mobile phone texting hardly cultural acheivements,really....:suicide:
Not a patch on the chinese as a spectacle,or even the greek olympics...

Better than I ever expected it to be. I didnt expect it to be a patch on beijing but Id say it came pretty close, especially during the industrial revolution and Chariots of Fire sequeces...though the comedy and many of the references were Brit-targeted, as were finding out from some of the international tweets out there.

Jas.

Sorry for the late reply, but Ithought that that the Opening Ceremony was AWESOME!!!! :D:smashin::clap:

Does anyone else agree that having the closing ceremony today somewhat devalues the corresponding paralympic games?

No, as there are separate opening and closing ceremonies for the Paralympics
