This HBO crime mini could be a good companion show to True Detective. Or even a lite True Detective 3.

Premieres July 10, the eight-episode series features John Turturro, Michael K. Wiilliams, Riz Ahmed,Glenne Headly, Ben Shenkman, Max Casella, Amara Karan, Sofia Black-D’Elia. Paul Sparks, Afton Williamson, Paulo Costanzo, Ned Eisenberg, Mohammad Bakri, Nabil Elouahabi, Ashley Thomas, Glenn Fleshler, Chip Zien

Adapted from an award-winning 2008 BBC series, the Americanized Criminal Justice was to feature James Gandolfini as Jack Stone, a “downtrodden jailhouse attorney who frequents police stations for clients.” In his search, the character encounters Naz, an American-born Pakistani with no memory of his accused crime of stabbing to death a young woman he met:

Pretty good and almost nails the fear you experience when you're
accused of something grievous that you know you didn't commit. Went through a similar experience (attempted murder) when I was a kid. Long story. But briefly accused, questioned, etc, not charged.

Anyway, I'd recommend checking this out as I expect it'll develop into a nice little drama/thriller. John Turturro is excellent, as he is in everything he's in.

The first act was ok. Didn't really care about the
    girl.
The cinematography was good considering the lack of varied settings. Some familiar faces.

Got potential as a thriller. Protag was a bit cliched, a bit one-note but expect his story to open up as story progresses.

Will possibly be on the BBC, since it's a BBC Worldwide co-production, based on the original BBC series Criminal Justice, and produced by Bad Wolf (former BBC drama execs Jane Tranter's and Julie Gardner's production company).

Though still could be on Sky Atlantic ... EDIT ... which it is

Good second episode, just following the legal route for what is happening to the kid, and it does not get any better.

the laywer (John Turturro) is not coming across well for his motives for takng on the case

This is a interesting doc on the current police situation in the US, not related to this story but they do look down to the Muslim characters in the series somewhat,

Yeah I think it's going to devolve into all sides of the American justice system failing him, including John Turturro's lawyer character. It's a good show though. Interesting wee story, especially given the recent high profile problems with the US justice system. Shame James Gandolfini isn't around to see his pet project come to fruition, but it's in good hands.

Edit - The documentary is quite a sad one. I know I'd freak out if my lungs were compressed by six, seven, eight or more burly men pressing down on me for flicking a cigarette onto the ground. I don't even know if I'd be in control of my body flailing around in attempt to draw breath, yet it's considered resisting over there so you cop a beating - or worse - for it. Sad. Just sad.

Episode 5 was fantastic. Think it was called The Night of the Witch. Things are heating up nicely, with a juicy mystery right at the centre of the story. Best TV show available right now. Hands down. John Turturro is superb, as is the rest of the cast. Some fantastic photography, and the characters are expertly crafted. Can't think of a single flaw. This will win multiple awards in multiple categories.

Check it out. Best thing on TV right now.

In some respects yeah it's a shame that something on such high quality is short on air time, but on the other hand I'm glad that the story will be concluded shortly. Don't think it's the type of story that'd survive a prolonged run stretched out over multiple years.

Good episode, not as strong as last week's though. The scene with the
hearse driver was creepy. Don't think he did it though. Just an antisocial weirdo. Think the predator exhusband of Andrea's mother is the murderer. For obvious reasons, i.e. the inheritance. But then you wonder why he bothers turning up at Naz's trial. I mean if he's only interested in the money he doesn't need to put an act on as it's now his by law. Hmm. Hearse driver or Paul Sparks (ex hubbie). He goes after elderly women with money and land. This show is all about the predator-prey relationship, e.g. defenders/prosecutors, police/suspects, man/woman, prison kings and prison cannon fodder, etc.

    Next week should be good.

Think I'm wrong about the bit above.
Actually wouldn't be that surprised if Naz is found guilty and we never conclusively discover who the murderer is. Seems to have been a crime of passion - 22 stab wounds, some down to the bone - so that may rule out Paul Sparks' character who apparently was only interested in Andrea's mum's inheritance. On the other hand perhaps he wants it to look like a crime of passion, possibly witnessed Naz entering the apartment with her and staged the murder to look like her bf or one-night stand did it.

Re. the hearse driver and a certain scene from last week's episode -
when the prosecutor visits the pathologist we see the uncovered body of a black man on the slab. The prosecutor and pathologist contrive to frame the evidence in such a way that it supports an argument against Naz's innocence, even though the alternative reason, i.e. the one that doesn't go some distance in proving Naz's guilt, may be entirely valid. There's no dignity in this scene - for Naz, for the rule of law, and most of all for the deceased.

Compare that scene to last night's in which we see the hearse driver showing off his sense of biblical righteousness to Chandra, the green lawyer who's out of her depth. Sure the hearse driver is creepy - proper old school bible thumper creepy - but he has enough respect for the dead to cover them up whilst talking about the case with Chandra. Does it point to a deeper meaning? Possibly.

I think he was offended by the implication that he followed Andrea and Naz home and then murdered her, framing Naz in the process. On the other hand he's still a suspect for obvious reasons, and it's possible that he did murder her, believing it's justified to kill a harlot due to his perception of the bible's decrees on such matters.

Heck, the CPA guy may even be a suspect at this stage. He seems to have some beef with Paul Spark's character and didn't hesitate in throwing him under the bus. Is he trying to throw the police/lawyers off the scent? Was he having an affair with is client's daughter? Promised to get the inheritance money for her but found a rival who was just an interested in it himself (Paul Spark's character)? Why kill Andrea though? To cover his tracks, save his career? She was going to grass him up for failing to keep up his end of the bargain, i.e. get the entire inheritance from mommy's estate.

Noticed James Gandolfini has an Executive Producer credit on this, has the show been sitting on the shelf or is it someone else with the same name?

I believe that it was shelved by HBO following Gandolfini's death. Apparently it was his pet project and was going to star Robert De Niro as attorney Jack Stone. Surprised De Niro has the time these days given his foray into the hospitality business!

It's an amazing TV series. The best this year.

Second only to Gomorrah IMHO. Bit of a weird title though don't you think? .... doesn't really do it justice. Fantastic series though.

Only caught the opening scenes of Gomorrah. Couldn't take to the film from about 2008 but have heard so much praise for the TV series. Will need to check it out.

    Shame its over

we did fnd out the possible killer with motive, not Naz, he got free due to a hung? jury not knowing how to vote, so no new trial he walked free, and the cat was back!
