I recieved my copy of this last week and watched it last night.I didn't own the original disc so didnt mind paying for this one.The review may help those thinking about buying the new version.(btw i borrowed my mates previous R1 for comparison)

    The Movie

Well if no-one has seen this yet then where have you been.It is a fun tongue in cheek adventure movie, with outstanding special effects.Incorporating other ideas like Indiana Jones and the Romancing the stone type pictures, it is played for laughs as well as Gob smaking action scenes.Brendan Fraser is fun as our dashing hero,Rachel Weisz as the love interest and egyptian expert, and John Hannah as the comic drunk brother who specialises in picking pockets.

    Rating 5

    Picture Quality

This appears to be exactally the same print used for the original DVD release. Very sharp with no artifacts(excuse the pun) and good detail in the darker shots, which are quite common. There is a little dirt on the print in the brighter scenes, but not a great deal. All in all a good print, which like i said is exactly the same as the previous disc.

    Rating 4.5

    Sound

This will proberly be the biggest selling point of this disc, It comes with DTS 5.1 as well as DD 5.1 soundtracks.(note that DTS is not included on the second disc containing the pan and scan version of the movie, not a great loss but may interest 4:3 fans)

I have to say that i was a little disapointed with the DTS track, which like Jurassic Park lacks a little in the bass side of things. In fact listening to the DD mix added that missing bottom end.Strange? Well this disc is released by Universal who where also responsible for JP so it may be a fault with their DTS encoding.Other than the lacking bass everything appears where it should and the mix is very involving with many right to left panning with the rear channel.
To sum up, it is proberly not the best DTS mix and may not be worth updating just for this.
    RATING DD 5 DTS 4.5

    Extras
Again very disapointing when it comes to the extras. For one thing the isolated score has vanished, and all the other extras from the first disc reappear here. The only new additions are a very short, and not too indepth featurette on the Mummy Returns along with a trailer for that movie and some DVD rom features which i hate.
It will interest you to know that the features are spead over two discs.

The first disc contains the anamorphis 235:1 version of the movie with DD DTS and comentaries(x2).It also contains "building a better mummy""Egyptology 101""production notes" and "cast and crew".
The second disc features the pan and scan version of the film in DD.The deleted scenes, visual effects,Original trailer, and Pharaoh linage from the original disc and adds,The mummy Returns Featurette and trailer and a photograph montage.
    RATING EXTRAS 5

If you dont already own the original version on DVD then buy this as it is worth the money. If you already own the original then i would think twice, as i have said the extras and the FAULTY DTS track may not be worth the extra expense.

The packaging is in one box and the art work is fine.

P.S the ratings for the extras are for the entire content, if it was rated for just adding to your existing disc then it would be 2 out of 5.

    Cheers

    Cheers THX,
Very informative review that has helped me to decide on staying with my original copy of the mummy R1.

Indeed Martin you did say you would be back :)

Looks like a not so special-special edition the doesn't it?

    Dunno why Universal bothered really.

Cheers for the indepth review, I had the Mummy on reg2 (purchased in the BOGOHP deal)and when I heard about the "ultimate edition" release I took mine back to the shop saying it was surplus and I got £15 back and then ordered the new one from play for £18 so it has only cost me £3 so hopefully having the new R1 edition is worth paying an extra £3.

I got The Mummy last year, and as a fan of Jerry Goldsmith’s works, look forward to the isolated sound track (that some reviewer said was on the disc), yet despite it being shown on a screen shot, of the menu on the back cover of the case, I have never found it on my copy of the disc. Can anyone help?

There should be an isolated score on the R1 original release. It was dropped on the ultimate edition and the R2 disc.

Thanks THX 1138, I’ll stop trying to find it.
As usual R2 gets screwed again.
