This is probably the most visually stunning film I have seen, Perfection.

Cannot wait to revisit in 3D!

As per, Thanks for the review Cas.

Thought it was a fine film, but was spoilt by reading the book. Loved the detail the book went into and more adventures that Mark had.

The film did move at a cracking pace, though some things Mark did with some more explanation would have seemed less preposterous.

Yep me too. There is an extended one coming later in the year which Im hoping will flesh out Watney's isolation more like the book.

Can't believe they didn't just release the extended version straight away on Bluray. Are they really milking it by tricking people into buying cinema version now and then re-releasing extended version again later? Are they also going to repeat the same trick with the 4K version?

No idea but the special edition is definitely happening and I think Im selling my steelbook soonish as I just wont watch the normal one if theres an extended cut around. This film needs a longer cut and Im glad its getting one.

Nice review Cas and I cant argue with any of it. Im looking forward to hopefully more Watney dealing with problems (as in the book) in the extended cut though as there just didn't seem enough to me.

Yes, I also wanted the extended cut
where the extended buggy trip takes place with the problems with it tipping over happens
, I was going to buy the version for sale now, but now I think I will hold out for extended.

Exactly - I really missed that bit from the book as there's some real tension there. And there's loads of other things that could be added but primarily we need to see more of Watney alone and trying to cope with the situation.

Seen this 4 times already enjoyed it every time saw it with 4 different people and they also loved the film, definitely one of my favorites of last year. Soundtrack is also one of the best I have heard 2nd to only Interstellar

Is this definitely getting an extended version? as a special edition doesn't automatically mean that ie Gravity SE is just a few extra bonus features and Dolby Atmos

IIRC there were strong rumours about a director's cut even before it left cinemas, now the Digital Bits have confirmed with their "sources" that there will be a proper SE before long.

Were there not rumors of an extended cut of Prometheus but that turned out to be nothing?

So officially there is a SE on the way but its not confirmed to included an extended cut?

Scott refused to do an Extend Cut of Prometheus, considering the theatrical version as his director's cut he mentioned it way back in 2012.

Ridley Scott Explains Why There's No Extended Cut Of PROMETHEUS

But he has talked about an Extended Cut for the The Martian its in the film review thread post 30. The Martian Review

I loved the book but was left a bit disappointed in the film.
Its far from a bad film but I don't think the cinematic release does the book justice.
Pace is too fast and too many interesting parts of the book have been omitted.

In saying that, I'd love an extended version as I think would allow more time to be spent on his actual journey and also provide more tension.

Thank goodness for that, a lucky escape. Just didn't enjoy Prometheus at all. Ridley Scott has to be one of the most overblown directors out there, his list of poor films seems endless.

Saying that I really enjoyed The Martian and, like others have mentioned, the current edition does seem to short to flesh out Watney's character.

I enjoyed this film better than i thought i would. Mark Watney's sarcasm was funny. Not eye watering belly laughs, but chuckle funny.

I agree with you on Blade Runner. I went to see Alien in the cinema the week it came and is one of my all time favourite films. Gladiator is a top film for me yet it is so full of mistakes, even the printed leaflet made an appearance a thousand years before it was invented. Then you have Robin Hood, Kingdom of Heaven, Prometheus.....oh dear.

      Oh dear?

Robin Hood wasn't great but I liked it.

Prometheus was great and I still love it despite a few issues.

Kingdom of Heaven DC is one of Ridley's very best and easily the best epic war film in recent years. Its also easily the best film about the Crusades.

      Oh dear indeed.

I have to say, I really enjoyed this film. I have also passed the Blu Ray round the office and everyone who has seen it so far has loved it. It's def Ridley's best for some time. However like Jim above, whilst Prometheus had issues, it is a solid Sci-fi film that gets better with subsequent viewings.
