Travelled down from my Mum's yesterday, my missus counted over 30 speed cameras on our side of the road down the north section of the motorway around Solihull. It always seems to have a 50mph limit. One of the worst roads in the country IMO. Why is it like this?

We also noticed single lines and further down the motorways two dots together, followed by the same thing a bit down the road.

What are these? Different types of speed camera?

Did neither of you spot the roadworks around Solihull? They're the biggest & longest running in the UK! The speed has been 50 mph along there for over 4 years. I also think that a team of 4 guys has been doing all the work - that must be the most deserted construction area in the world.

However you may also have spotted the overhead gantries? Soon these will have variable speed limits and cameras on them, just like the M25. :lesson:

Lets throw up some road works to justify having cameras on ....

...... then leave out the cones and park a waggon 1 a week to make it look like we are still doing something becasue its soo profitable.

Every one of them have been installed in the last year as prior to that, there were none.

Is that the same Solihull that's only 15 minutes away from me :(

    What the Highways Agency say

"Active Traffic Management (ATM) is a pilot project on a section of the M42 between junctions 3a and 7. It will be introduced in phases to tackle congestion, by making best use of existing road space while minimising environmental disruption. Equipment such as monitoring loops within the road surface and cameras will constantly monitor road conditions and enable the Highways Agency to provide better information to road users on current road traffic conditions."

They should call it a ABS (absolute bloody shambles) rather than an ATM
