im sure this bond film has been on dvd for ages
in fact a while ago all bond movies were all on sale @ £7.99 each from most retailors.

so im not sure where your £80 price has come from.

    please enlighten.........

As far as I remember, the studio withdrew the original DVD over some controversy to do with some of the extras (??) and never stated when it would be released again. Hence, on Ebay, it became a bit of a collectors item as not that many were sold, relative to other Bond films on DVD. The last time I looked, a couple of months ago, prices were as high as £80 for an original sealed R2 UK copy - why that high? Cos some people were willing to pay that, I guess! I ordered a copy from play.com in December 2001, when they had a 007 2 for £17 offer and will finally get it next month when it's re-released!

i stand corrected, i wasnt aware of this instance.
its sounds like a similar situation as to the original
'italian job' which was also withdrawn from sale.
(but is now back on the market after rights issues have been cleared up)

It was originally thought that but it turned out just to be some licensing rights.

do you think the forthcoming 007 box set would be aworthwhile investment ?
    its on play @£169.99
while i like bondy films, i cant say i ever watch them when there always being rerun on itv. that said the look of this set looks tempting. although after last years 19 disk release, you have to ask whether this set will continually be upgraded.

Are the older bond films, From Russia with Love, Goldfinger etc. 5.1 or not? I'm getting conflicting information from rewind, review sites and suppliers.

Well I suppose as long as they keep making the movies then the box set will keep getting updated, although by the time the next one is out on DVD we may be into Blu-Ray :D

As for the price of the box set tin on play.com, I thought that was good value until I checked it on www.amazon.co.uk and found it for less than £150 including free postage, so if you're going to invest you may as well get it from there :smashin:

Having said that, amazon are also selling the individual dvds for £7.99 so if you don't need all to complete your collection or just want a few then go for that offer - I did and spent £110 yesterday on the ones I don't already have

I have many of the Bond DVDs and I have to say the picture quality ranges from indifferent to poor when viewed on a projector. From Russia With Love is perhaps the exception to this rule - it actually looks quite film-like and doesn't seem to have any haloes.

I recorded The Spy Who Loved Me off Freeview with my HTPC last weekend, and it looked about the same as the DVD for PQ. Unless you really want the movies, I'd wait a few years for HD versions.

On the other hand, if MGM can't be bothered to get the DVDs right, the HD versions will probably look rough too. The older movies probably need restoring.

I though Licence To Kill was not up to scratch quality wise especially for a relatively recent movie. Anybody else think it was a poor quality.

    Garret mate....

With you on 'Living Daylights' being best bond.....thought Dalton was great for the action and spying stuff but certainly worst for wooing babes...way too serious. Significant for me that it was John Barry's last score for Bond and for me one of his best...the dangling out of the plane bit gives me goosebumps every time!!

'Licence to Kill' I also rate highly.....fond memories of watching this at the flicks with a couple of mates and a male teacher from school who later was convicted of 'kiddy fiddling' (not with us before you say!!). This one is a 'grower' as I thought it was only OK at the time but love it now. I reckon the pix are a 7.5 out of 10 - bit soft but not bad.

I would say The Man With The Golden Gun is the first one with 5.1.

Simple screen and sound specs from my tin collection (except for Living Daylights which i sold on ebay for silly money but have just reordered again on dvd.co.uk at £16.99 for two, my brother wants one)
    Dr No. Mono
    FRWL Mono
    Goldfinger 1.77, Mono
    Thunderball 2.35, DD5.1
    YOLT 2.35, Mono
    OHMSS 2.35, Mono
    DAF 1.77, Mono
    LALD 1.77, Mono
    TMWTGG 1.77, Mono
    TSWLM 2.35, DD5.1
    Moonraker 2.35 DD5.1
    Octopussy 2.45 D Surround
    AVTAK 2.35 DD5.1
    LTK 2.45 DD5.1
    Golden Eye 2.35 DD5.1
    TND 2.44 DD5.1
    TWINE 2.35 DD5.1
    DAD 2.35 DDEX, DTS-ES

Having grown up with Roger Moore he was my favourite but having rewatched all of these again several times Timothy Dalton is my favourite bond, he was apparently approached at the time of OHMSS but he thought himself too young well according to the featurette on LD. I would be surprised if they change any specs on these dvds as it is easy just to stick 20 of them in the current tin and sell them. I have seen talk on commanderbond.net that there will be a new tin set for bond no. 21 which should included revamps in picture and sound of some of the older ones, but how much of this is fact i dont know.
