This was not quite what I had in mind for myself for this month, but I quite like it and I'm not sure I'll have a chance to shoot anything better. Editing very shortly: non. This is what you would call SOOC=straight out of camera.

Nice, but it looks front-side lit to me rather than backlit, especially with the shadow cast on the leaf?

Agree with snerkler looks more lit from the font hence shadow of leave on leave. nice detail in leaves though.

This is nice, I like the lighting, but if I'm completely honest I had higher expectations for your shot this month after your winning shot last month was so good. Was hoping you'd do something more creative, but like you said, finding the time to shoot something suitable isn't always easy.

I can assure you, all the light was coming from behind. If you go and look at it large, you will see it. Yes, I had higher expectations for myself, too. But alas, things don't always happen the way you want them to. Thank you for the comments.

I appreciate only you know where the light was coming from M, but it doesn't scream backlit and certainly looks to be front lit, even though I know you say it wasn't. In fact it looks so front lit to me I thought at first you'd used a flash. Dunno why it looks like this if you say the light was coming from behind  Plus, my basic knowledge of physics say that if a shadow is cast on the front on the leaf then there must be a strong light source from the front

I don't understand the lighting either but I think I get what M is meaning when you view it large as some of the background leaves look backlit...

Maybe one or two at the top-right of the frame, but the rest look front-lit to me. Light's a funny old thing though... ;)

Lol... Unfortunately I don't have "behind the scenes"-shot of this. But I was stood under the chestnut tree and the sun was shining from above and I shot these leaves :) But if you think it's front lit (which I can't really understand how you think it's that...), then I guess that's what it looks like :) Ho hum.. And the shadow is made by other leaves that or on top of the ones the light shines through. Have you never ever shot a similar shot yourselves??? o_O

So the tree shot I have in the not valid-thread looks front lit to you too, then?

Definitely looks more backlit to me. Terry's pics in the INV are great examples of backlit leaves imo, as are pics 3 and 4 that you posted :)

Fully appreciate what you're saying M, but all I can do is comment on how it looks :p

I wash my hands of this... If I ever was going to shoot something completely opposite to the theme, it would obviously happen when I myself chose the theme, right? Oh well, like I said earlier, if that's what it looks like then that's what it looks like.

I think you're taking it a bit too seriously M - I think the comments/observations are all pretty relevant - though possibly not as obvious to yourself as the photographer who was there and saw it as it was in full context - the shot as posted gives no context of the shooting conditions/orientation etc. that you mentioned and hence the simple thing like an obvious shadow gives an (IMO) immediate impression of the lighting source that's hard to shake...

Sorry M, never wanted to offend or cause an argument, and never said it's not how you say it is. But unfortunately how it was shot and how it looks are two different things, that's all I'm saying :smashin:

You are all obviously staring at the big leafs and looking at nothing else in the picture, if you can't spot where the light source is :) And yes, I can take things a bit too seriously too, it's not just others right to do that, doh.

Just for the record I was standing next to Marika when she took this and it most certainly was backlit, the sun was high in the sky directly behind the tree that she was taking the photo of. The shadow that can be seen on the right is actually coming from a leaf between the target leaf and the light source, Hence the shadow is actually hitting the back of the leaf not the front as some have assumed.

I think when Marika set the theme she was hoping for backlit subjects where you could still make out the detail on the front of the subject, hence a picture like this.

All themes are of course open to interpretation and if this doesn't say 'backlit' to some then that is fair enough, just saying that it actually is.

just seeing this , didn't realise that I had the same subject. to my eyes its unmistakeably backlit. if it was lit front the front there wouldn't be any shadows on the top right of the leaf and the piece on the left would be illuminated. , :p

John's pretty much got to say that now I suppose  - and of course he's had the "benefit" of the preceeding explanations as well :)
