This seems to have slipped passed everyone's radar BBC4 Monday night at 10pm. It's only a 3 parter kind of based on Peter Gabriel (Brian Pern or Simon Day) but generally taking the mick out of rock with lots of guest appearances . I haven't laughed so much in a long time especially at Phil Collins talking about playing with Led Zeplin at Live Aid.

I watched the first one - in the middle of the excellent Danny Baker "Rock Decades" series, then forgot about them

Enjoyed the first one so I'll try to catch up on iPlayer.

    Love it.

Rhys Thomas and Simon Day said (on Richard Bacon's 5 live programme below) that all were happy to take part (including a certain person whom Brian is a spoof of) with newly scripted filmed interviews and/or specific old footage ... EXCEPT Led Zep, essentially doing the same as they did for the Live Aid DVD release. They were also pleased about Noel Edmonds, as they weren't sure he'd be game after Brass Eye. Rhys clearly has a lot of access, seeing as aside from his comedy/acting he made the serious official documentaries on Queen and Freddie.

found it to be average (did I get the impression that this character is based on Peter Gabriel?) though did laugh out loud during Led Zep's Live Aid section, even if the joke was a little long

^^^ Simon Day said he based him and the voice on podcasts Peter Gabriel made which were apparently quite awkward sounding and on mundane subject matter

Watched the first 2 and thought it was okay. People of a certain age group will get every joke and piss take. (50) Young uns wont get it. Theyll think its a documentary.
Thought Phil Collins bit looked like it had been filmed for something else and not the program.

    and Rick Wakemans always funny.

Loved the first episode (especially the massive mixing desk, the deaf engineer and the non-castor chair!), but thought the quality of the second dropped dramatically and was nowhere near as good nor funny.

I suppose the over extended Leo Sayer/Rick Parfitt clip/joke was a portent of things to come....

Will watch the final episode next week but not expecting great things.

Okay, I take it back - it was marvellous!

Funny how you can have just a three parter yet muck up one of the parts! This was much more up to the standard of part one with some great characters and a completely unexpected cameo from PG himself!

    And wasn't the gorilla good?

The interview with Phil was genuine and not made for this show. A smacked-out Jimmy Page tried to wrongfoot Phil when he asked him where the drums come in on Stairway To Heaven.

I love that this is so heavily based on Gabriel-era Genesis, though. Gabriel has needed the rise taking out of him for some time now. His earnestness does grate with me and those costumes and makeup were always a bad idea.

I do wonder how much research goes into these interviews. Ergo, Gabriel's first album was not a "stark" affair at all. Much of it was overblown and overproduced. His second album, that was stark, and proved that, as a producer, Robert Fripp was a very good guitarist. By his third album, Gabriel had been dropped by Atlantic (that's what writing about presidential assassinations from the killer's perspective will do for your career in America) and he was so skint, he had to rely on Phil Collins coming onboard to play for free. And, to add the proverbial insult to injury, his old bandmates had to bail him out of the financial disaster that was WOMAD.

To be fair, I didn't really give it a fair go, hopefully we'll get a repeat run soon

Though still laughing about the 'Live Aid" segment :)

Much better second ep imho. If anything, they certainly nailed it re writer Kathy Lette, who is always incredibly annoying and unfunny.
