The LG LM670T Smart Cinema 3D TV Thread

Just thought I'd post my findings on my 55LM660T that i've had for the last couple of weeks. Can't see a 660 thread but seeing as it's the same set apart from the colour of the trim I thought i'd post on here. Some of you may have seen me before on these forums over the last year or so in my conquest to find an acceptable set, be it LED or plasma. I've got through many, including Samsung D6900's, LG LW550's, a Panasonic GT30 and a few others. I loved passive 3d and was keen to give LG's 2012 sets a chance after I returned my GT30 due to green splodge and poor motion issues. In fact I had beeen dogged with motion issues for the last few months, starting with a D6900 and including the GT30 too.
Anyway, I picked up the 55LM660T a couple of weeks ago and am so far very impressed. general PQ is excellent IMO, obviously not in the same league as the GT30 I had, but all round I find it excellent at any time of the day. The main bugbear of the 4 lw550's I had last year was banding and dse. Although this set does display banding, it is very mild and not really noticeable most of the time. I watched the FA cup final yesterday and although it was there, it was no way near as bad as what I experienced last year with the LW550's and didn't spoil my enjoyment of the game. There is not even the slightest hint of dse on this set. The 550's I had last year varied from non existant on one to totally unwatchable on another so I'm pleased with the LM660 in that respect.
Backlight bleed is evident in the top 2 corners. It's never noticeable during daytime or night times with lights on. Turn the lights off and it's still not noticeable when whatever you are watching fills the whole screen. It's only really noticeable when watching films with black bars and even then it's not really distracting, again I'd say it's an improvement on last years sets, but then I never really had an issue with this on the 550's i had.
Black levels are great in daylight and with lights on at night, even watching in total darkness I find they hold up very well, not quite as good as plasma but they certainly don't disgrace themselves on this set.
Now, motion on this set I'm finding to be the best I've had for sometime. I've had problems with judder on the last few sets I've had, be it led or plasma, I don't know if it's just me picking up on something that everyone else ignores but it's been bugging me for months. I'm happy to say that this set has no judder whatsoever, even without the trumotion controls which quite frankly I don't want it's as smooth as anything. Yes there is a slight bit of blur but i'd willingly trade in the annoying judder I've experienced lately for a bit of blur which doesn't bother me. Even 3d fims, which I found on last years 550's to have some judder, are completely free of any judder. 3D in general also seems better than last year and in my opinion is so much more enjoyable to watch than active. I've had both active and passive and have always prefered passive, the difference in quality is just barely noticeable and I love the fact that I can watch 3d at anytime of the day without blacking my room out to avoid the annoying headache inducing flicker.
So I'm very happy with this set, after getting through countless sets over the last 18 months I'd say it's the best I've had. It's not perfect, it has a bit of mild banding and backlight bleed, but nowhere near like i experienced last year on the 4 550's I had. I found the buzzing, brightness fluctuations, fan noise and motion judder on the other sets i had a lot more annoying than anything on this set.
Yes, I suppose I could return it due to the mild banding and backlight bleed but I honestly don't think I would get an improvement. There maybe slightly better sets out there but from my experience last year I normally end up with one that is worse. Obviously I would prefer one without these problems but the chances of getting one is very slim.
Oh, and a hats off to Richer Sounds who have been nothing short of fantastic with me over the last couple of months, a much better buying experience than John Lewis who although at times had been excellent, at others they had been awfull, depending on who you speak to.

I just read your post and along with the review in Home cinema choice for this model I'm now wondering wether i should be looking at this, its in my price range, has the looks not my main priority and more importantly a decent review from a magazine and a forum member.

+1 for Richer Sounds, one of the *VERY* BEST AV specialists in the UK.

Hello now there are two conflicting reviews for the same set. I am confused ! My viewing would be mainly 2D with occasional 3D. I was strongly contending this against the ES6800 but after hearing crosstalk issues on 3D I am not so sure anymore. I mean why buy a 3D TV when you cant use 3D at all !!! Then I heard of LG Passive 3D and I was thinking of giving this a try but there are not many reviews on the new lineup.... Any further comments on the picture quality will be greatly appreciated !

The biggest thing putting me off on this set is the potential banding that near enough EVERY owner has stated they're seeing. This would totally destroy the viewing experience for me, but also appears to be on every LED tv there is.

Anybody able to put my mind at ease?

Hows the input lag? thinking on getting this TV for gaming ps3 and PC.

thanks

I would avoid this tv for gaming! I tried it with my Xbox 360 and it was terrible. Blurry and the quality was very poor. I'm not an expert with this stuff though but for a 2012 led tv compared to my 2011 Samsung led i was shocked at the difference.

Hi all well Ive tested my tv 42LM670T, and here are my results, after set up I went with standard /user mode
all prossesing off apart from Gamma medium , dynamic contrast low, black level low,and led local dimming low.
Picture looks very good in SD and excelent in HD, 3D is superb, and i can't see any DSE or Banding.
I have made a short video, which I have made a link to at the end of this report, I am no expert when It comes to black levels and all that, but my eyes are my guide and this tv is super,It maybe 42" doesn't show up as much of the trits that larger screens do, and the off angle before pictue starts to fade slightly, is 45 degrees. All in all iam very pleased with my purchase.

Your set up looks amazing. You're picture settings are spot on and the videos are excellent only 1 point, and I was afraid of it
Screen reflection, this looks really bad at one point you can see your clock which is behind you. I was going to purchase this set but your videos have confirmed my fears that in the real world there would be a high mirror effect from this set

Struggling to understand the price differential on this set compared to the 620T.
At Currys for example the 42LM670T is twice the price of the 42LM620T.
OK it has a couple of extra features like built-in wifi and a magic remote.
But otherwise it is the pretty much the same panel isn't it, just in a different housing.

Yes it is a nicer looking TV with a couple of extra features that together justifies a price premium - but twice the price? for what?

Hi I think the 620 hasn't got local dimming, which you need to get the deep blacks.

Hi john, the camera makes the reflections more than they are in real time, I have not had any problems viewing in natural light or ambient light, very like viewing a plasma.

is it that 620t doesn't have controllable local dimming but the automatic settings changes the dimming zones itself so the blacks aren't that far off the 670t.

How do you upload pictures to avforum.

yes, but twice as much for that?

Though I guess Curry's prices are themselves a bit excessive for this set, and perhaps equivalent 660t or 669T models will be better once more widely available.

Does anyone know what the difference between the 660t and the 670t is? Other than £50. I'm struggling to see what it is.

Or the 669t.
Where does that fit in?

It seems the differentiation in some cases is purely who the retailer is.
i.e. some of these are going to be retailer 'exclusives' to prevent price comparisons.

Agreed....it's confusing!

on the LG website the 660t is £50 cheaper than 670t but looks identical (2 pairs of 3D glasses less was all i saw).

What's funny as well is the MSRP of the 55"670t is £1849 and then gives a link to John Lewis etc who are selling it for £1999

Amazon are selling the 55" 660t for £1699, so if it's the same that's big saving.

any why on John Lewis is the 47LM669T £1449, whereas the 47LM670T is just £1379 (both £100 more than LG's apparent recommended price ), and yet the LG and JL's own comparator doesn't show any difference between them? All I can see is cosmetic differences such as the stand.

I am going in to JL tomorrow morning to take a look, so will try and get an answer

The 660t has black trim and black plastic stand, the 670t has silver trim and silver stand. Everything else is identical. All you're paying for is a metal stand and silver trim. I went for the 660 as I hated the silver stand.
