Prime 80’s cheese … and no less entertaining because of it. The Last Starfighter occupies a unique place in the history of fantasy cinema for its groundbreaking use of CG effects, but it occupies an even more special place in the hearts of many who caught it first time around. Nick Castle directs with a wide-eyed incredulity that it is effortlessly infectious and Lance Guest is superb in the lead role. This is the Star Wars movie that Spielberg would have made – it has the schmaltz of ET, the wonder of a dumbed-down Close Encounters and the playful verve of Raiders. Sure the film has dated, but the sense of fun is thoroughly engaging and there are even a few slightly darker moments than much of this fare usually delivers.

The film’s transfer to HD is quite remarkable as well with an image that, after a few concessions for its age have been made, holds up very well, and a couple of audio tracks, including a nice TrueHD option, that is very rewarding considering that the film never had anything spectacular in its sound-design to begin with. It is also reassuring to see that the crucial extras from the Collector’s Edition SD have been ported over, too. All in all, this is a terrific little release for fans and definitely a worthy upgrade over the previous version. Those unacquainted with the movie may wonder what all the fuss is about … but, hey, just sit back and enjoy an exciting space-romp that just wants to entertain the eyes, ears and the heart. Great nostalgic stuff harking from a much more innocent time.

I was mildly disappointed with the disc. The colour on the print is so-oooo faded out.
