After much speculation Warner Bros. confirm the high-def release date

It's been rumoured for ages and Amazon were already taking pre-orders but Warner Bros. have at last confirmed that The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will arrive on Blu-ray 3D , Blu-ray and DVD on the 19th of March in the US, which probably means an 18th of March release here in the UK. Whilst this is the theatrical version, Warner Bros. have also confirmed that an extended cut will be released on Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray and DVD 'in time for the holidays', which probably means a November date, just like with the Lord of the Rings movies. Peter Jackson will also offer fans the first sneak peek at the second film in the trilogy, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, in a live streaming event on Sunday, March 24th (at 8:00 PM GMT) on the official website. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug opens in cinemas around the world on the 12th of December.

The film will be released as a Blu-ray 3D (with the 3D version, 2D version and the DVD), as a Blu-ray (2D version and DVD) and as a DVD and best of all, the Blu-rays will be at 24p of course. The extras on all three versions will include the New Zealand: Home of Middle Earth documentary, 10 previously seen behind-the-scenes video blogs (Start of Production, Location Scouting, Shooting Block One, Filming in 3D, Locations: Part 1, Locations: Part 2, Stone St. Studios Tour, Wrap of Principal Photography, Post-production Overview and Wellington World Premiere), 5 theatrical trailers (Dwarves, Letter Opener, Bilbo Contract, Gandalf Wagers and Gollum Paths) and 3 videogame trailers (for The Hobbit: Kingdoms of Middle-Earth, Guardians of Middle-Earth and Lego The Lord of the Rings). All three versions will also include UltraViolet.
