i was listening to steve wright on radio 2 today and apparently goodfellas has been voted the greatest film ever by some panel of british film 'experts'.
    anyone else heard anything?

It was from "Total Film" Magazine. Their top 10 ran as follows:

    1. Goodfellas
    2. Vertigo
    3. Jaws
    4. Fight Club
    5. Godfather Part 2
    6. Citizen Kane
    7. Tokyo Story
    8. The Empire Strikes Back
    9. Lord of the Rings (I assume the trilogy as a whole)
    10. His Girl Friday

Their new issue is out this week (which will contain the rest of their list).

How the bloody hell can Jaws AND fight club be voted above Empire?

Voted by a panel of deluded muppets for crying out loud.

    Rant, Rant, Rant!

Why is Citizen Kane on the list ? Vertigo ? Marnie is a better Hitchcock film than Vertigo and The Godfather 1 and 2 are both better than Goodfellas ( which i admit is a very good film )

The greatest film ever is such a debatable and contenious subject and i personally think my opinion would change like the weather so i can't name one film which is head and shoulders above everything else.

I can respect the list although I'm suprised to see Fight Club. Much as I love it, I wouldn't automatically call it top ten material. In my own little world I'd put Apocalypse Now instead :).

I am surprised to see there are no Steven Segal movies listed.

However I am not surprised to see a true story listed as number 1. :smashin:

    these films were AVERAGE

Where are, American Beauty, Apocalypse Now, How the west was won, Aliens, The Abyss, Ulzana's Raid, The Man Who would be King, The Devils, The Eagle Has Landed, Terminator and many others all better than those seven movies.

Missing off Aliens and "The Italian Job" was a travesty!

I also find it odd that many people refer to The LotR Trilogy as a single film.....if thats the case shouldn't nearly every film with sequels/prequels be classed the same? Yet only LotR seems to get this special treatment........

Personally I think making a top ten movie list is bloody pointless because it's all subjective anyway. The list itself is only going to be put together using box office figures or something which doesn't represent how good a film is at all.

    bah

oh and where is Goonies on the list? :D

The last thing that list is put together with is box-office figures.

Are you seriously suggesting that a film like Tokyo Story had a bigger box office than the likes of Star Wars, Titanic and E.T.?

The Eagle Has Landed? Ulzana's Raid? How the West Was Won? The Abyss?

Better than Citizen Kane, Tokyo Story, Vertigo and Goodfellas?

Only on the Internet, eh folks? :D
