I too got this for myself for my Birthday, but unlike you I checked the back of the box B4 hand and was happy with the specs of the DVD.

I dont care if its not in 5.1 I kinda think that misses the point. I think re-mastering of sound can go TOO far.

Just think back to how sucessful making the old Laurel and Hardy movies into color was.

Unwrap the film, sit back with a few beers and enjoy

    Oh and happy birthday

Just been bought this (happy birthday to me etc) as it was always one of my fav movies ...
I was dissapointed to see it's not anamorphic and only mono so I have not "opened" it and could exchange it ...
    It's the R2 version but I gather the R1 isn't anamorphic or DD5.1 either ...
My question is - Is it still worth having ?
    TIA - Paul [IMG]

The great escape a great movie and its exactly what your wallet will think if you dont buy it. The picture is awful i can think of movies of a similar age that have had better ( vetigo for one in fact it might be older)dvd transfers.

But I like you bought the movie and guess what for all my complaints about the picture
quality I enjoyed it greatly and yes the beers helped.
