Anyone know where I can buy one of these new for Region 2 ?
Can't help you with where to find a R2 copy - is it out of print? - but a special edition is in the works and is due out later this year in R1 land with, I'd imagine, an inevitable R2 release to follow.
If your desperate for a copy now you could try eBay, but if you can wait I'd hold out for the SE. If it's anywhere near as good as the Paramount release of Once Upon A Time In The West then it will be worth it.
Where did you here about this upcoming special edition? Do you know if they will also be re-releasing Fistful of Dollars and For a Few Dollars More?
Heres details of the forthcoming Good Bad and Ugly SE
Sounds like a must buy when it finally arrives on dvd.
At the end of that article it says
"No DVD of the new restoration is in the works as yet. A special edition was planned in 2001 but cancelled. Savant would guess that if one came out, it would be 2004 at the earliest."
Doesn't look like a definite to me
Spaghetti Western Box Set
this is still available (play.com @ £40)
a bit pricey but has the 3 films in the series.
i have it and like the films, always have.
there not too great a transfer though.
no where near as good as 'once upon a time in the west'
I ordered the R1 counterpart for the Spaghetti Western Box called The Man With No Name - Trilogy. It was very cheap before xmas at dvdsoon. The price was $31.98 CAD but now the price has gone up to $39.98 CAD but it's still alot cheaper than the R2 box.
I bought TGTBTU,Fistfull Of Dollars and A Few Dollars more for £6-99 each in the middle of last year. I'll try and find the invoices to see where I got them from.
Found the info over at the Home Theatre Forums, posted by Christian Liemke from Germany on 12th Dec 03. My memory was off regarding the region - it's a French R2 release, but UK & US releases can't be far behind. No sign of the two 'Dollars' films though, I'm afraid.
Below is a cut & paste of Christian's post, inc. link to the original info -
"I found the first news on the upcoming Special Edition of Sergio Leones " Il Buono, il brutto, il cattivo / The Good, the Bad & the Ugly" [I / E 1966] on a French DVD-site.
This MGM-DVD contains the newly restored 175-minute cut with an anamorphic widescreen-transfer, English and French DD 5.1-tracks but no Italian track.
On the bonus side there will be one hour of documentaries: One documentary about spaghetti-westerns, one about the Civil War, another one about Sergio Leone, a making-of and a featurette about the restoration. Four other bonus features will be finding its way on the DVD, but no word what they are.
The French DVD will be released on April, 6th 2004."
"MGM Home Entertainment have announced the Region 1 DVD release of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly Collector's Edition for 18th May 2004 with a retail price of $29.98"
Seems the Region 2 special edition is coming out in April.
It contains an Anamorphic picture which should be an improvment on the original dvd !!
We have managed to get an early look at the late April UK Region 2 release of MGM's The Good The Bad & The Ugly Special Edition - and it looks fantastic.
The only extra feature on the first disc will be an audio commentary with genre expert Richard Schikel.
The remainder of the extras, littered over the second disc, include Leone's West making-of documentary; Leone's Style documentary; The Man Who Lost The Civil War background documentary; Restoring The Good The Bad & The Ugly audio featurette; The Secorrro Sequence: A Resconstruction animated gallery; Tuco Torture never-before-seen deleted scene; a two part Il Maestro music featurette; The French trailer (with additional deleted scenes) and 4 easter eggs. The set will retail at £19.99.
You can find the article, along with large shots of the menu here.
Expect a full review very soon.

Anyone know if the R2 SE is going to be a 2 disc set (doesn't look like it from play.com's description)
Scrap that... just fully read chris's post!!
