The Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone Blu-ray Review & Comments

Many like myself understand the GF was probably the greatest film ever made and Part 2 was not bad either. 3 just never clicked and reading Coppola latest interview upon release of *Coda*
Numerous pay disputes with Duvall and various others, re-shoots and of Coppola himself was in dire straits regarding monetary short-fulls. Previous films had not excelled with audiences.... the list goes on.
I have to watch this again to understand why it was never liked (can't remember the last time did tbh)
One interesting remark that Coppola made in the interview that he mentions Sofia and that she was not a prime actress at the time and hardly had any experience...... basically saying *not good enough*

My question is was there ever a need for Andy Garcia? if so, why him? :D

I'll make him an offer he can't refuse.” Long live Don Vito Corleone for me!

Agree, Sofia was woefully inexperienced, but shame on Francis for casting her with zero time to prepare for the role, and no experience to enable her to wing it.

And Andy Garcia? Well I thought he was exceptional in the underrated Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead and Infernal Affairs (opposite Gere), but his prominent roles mostly appeared to just call upon his zero-to-infinity hair-trigger anger.

He was reasonably reserved in Untouchables, and great in Black Rain, but both were supporting.

Ironically, he got a Best Actor nod for Godfather 3, which seems an odd decision, BUT he was asked to play the child of James Chan's equally volatile character, and that's pretty-much what he did, for good or bad.

Think it was one of Christopher Walken best performances in Things To Do In Denver When You're Dead, Andy was great too but Walken was something else... I always think about that nurse in it :)

Untouchables was Kevin Costner show... With Douglas in Black Rain he was brilliant tho as the not so serious cop who does not really understand the dire situation they both face in a hostile country.. That is some film and very unrated... can't believe it's 31 years old (WOW) and recently again in Ana too as a helpless salesman.

He tends to pop up here and there in some films..

We had some great films back then, before everyone went superhero bananas :)

Good shout on Internal Affairs Cas, great film (and its on Prime - will have to revisit), cant believe that was 1990, and then there was Nancy Travis 💘

Andy was also great in When a Man Loves a Woman, I know it was all about Meg Ryan, but he played a great struggling husband...

Just watched it. It really isn’t that much different from the original TBH. The start is better, but it’s a shame that the montage of the past via locations was removed as well. Some further scenes of Michael’s daughter and Vincent could have been removed IMO to lose some more moments of disabelief.

I found on iTunes (which is how I watched it) the sound is quite low volume. The original version is on as an extra (Need Apple device) and tha sound seemed normal.

I'll start by saying I'm the biggest godfather fan there is I love all three films equally, but this edit I can only describe as a rip-off he took out a couple of scenes spiced up the sound a bit and put it out for release to squeeze out a few more dollars out of a ready adequate movie. I was really looking forward to a new kinda start and finish to this movie however I feel really disappointed there was no real difference to this edited version and the original.

I have requested a refund from iTunes!

I am discussing it in the itunes UK thread and I can’t believe some reported reviews saying this cut improves the film, either they 1) haven’t seen The Godfather III in ages or 2) They have bought into FFC 1min 30second intro!

I prefer the ending of the original - the beginning is perhaps better, but he also removed the scenes from the deserted boat house from Godfather II, which I liked.

Why would he do that ? Probably the best bit in the film for me .

This is suddenly out of stock everywhere I've seen at British online retailors.

Can anyone find it in stock?

Thanks

I bought this day one but only just got round to watching it as I wanted to re-watch the first 2 again and was a bit sceptical since I never really understood the hate the 3rd movie got.

Thought the beginning worked much better in the Coda version but not so sure about the end. Some of the final scenes felt rushed as they cut little bits out but I felt happier not having to watch the very final scene from the original cut.

I noticed they cut some of the awkward bits out e.g. "Zasa! You son of a bitch!" and Altobello's exit from the the casino meeting where he looks like he's having a senior moment. Then there were some other bits of dialogue muted and extra bits added such as "It's his diabetes"

All in all, a minor improvement but I would have preferred a proper 4K release.

I forgot to mention that by the time of part 3, Pacino had lapsed into just being Pacino rather than a proper actor as in the first two.
That's an interesting take on it. I figured Pacino had lapsed into being Pacino much later on (and only really noticed it in that dreadful TV Movie about Phil Spector). In that case, do you think "Coda" casts him in a better or worse light? I thought it removed a lot of the sentimentality that made the original Part III sustainable, if worse than the first two.

I’d agree that the new cut is better and I do prefer it. It just always bothered me that Michael doesn’t same that much like Michael and is in fact much more Al.

the full Pacino takes off much more in later films but the process has already begun here.

What would you say were Pacino's best roles? I definitely think he has recently lapsed into same-ism.

That’s a good question. I personally only appreciate his performances in both Godfathers and to a lesser extent Coda. After that maybe Sea of Love, Serpico and Dog Day Afternoon. Heat was fairly good but I didn’t like his performance n it. Anything else is a no from me.

Anything else?!

Carlito's Way? Donnie Brasco? You didn't like him in Heat?!

Yeah actually I forgot about those two films - both very good with subtle Pacino performances.

No I didn’t like him in Heat but thought the film overall was good.

Afraid I haven't seen those. I did try to watch DB and Heat but somehow they bored me a little.

I think Pacino has tremendous power but a limited... aesthetic scope. And there are actors who suffer from vice versa.

Edit, recolour, reduce, expand, call it what you want Francis but you're suffering from what your friend Lucas has suffered interminably for 40 years and that is revisionism (his was cured by Disnee buying him out).

At least George was working with watchable material but GF³ was crap when it was made and it's still a dumpster fire.

Terrible direction (of some good actors but some rancid acting too) and story, just a total disaster. it dirties my memory of his masterpieces of The Godfather and The Godfather II. I just have to do my best to ignore GF³ and will just shred the UHD disc if it's forced on us boxing it up together.

Garbage in garbage out.
