The Fog R1

I'm waiting to receive this little gem (Play posted yesterday) and was wondering if anyone else had received it yet?

Considering that this film has the potential to show lots of visual defects if poorly encoded, is the picture quality good?

Is the spooky soundtrack improved and remixed?

Please let me know.....

I got it last week off play only had a quick look so far but the picture seems very good I will be watching it this week sometime,,,,, but you will proberly have got it by then.

All i do know is the last time i watched it (well half of it) I was about 11 and it scared me silly:eek: so i hope i can make it all the way through (now im nearly ,,,, but not quite 30);)

I had this on laserdisc.

I am sure the picture quality was very good, although the sound was only mono.

Having said that, there was something about the mono sound that seemed appropriate to the film.

it was waiting for me on my desk at work this morning so I haven't had a chance to check it out but its in 5.1 and Mono and labeled as 4:3 and 2.35:1 (16:9 enhanced) it being two-sided. Will watch it tonight but I didn't think it was due out until next month!

Bit confused as one side is gold (dual layered) and one (the 16:9 version) is silver which is single layered, never seen a two-sider with different layers on both sides

They are quite rare - they are known as a DVD-14 btw.

SS, SL: DVD5
SS, DL: DVD9 (aka RSDL)
DS, SL: DVD10
DS, DL: DVD18

I know of a couple of others, the R1 Terminator SE and one of the Vietnam:10,000 day war discs are the same format.

I've not yet got my copy of The Fog, perhaps all the extras are on the Dual Layer side?

thats another strange thing, the special features are labeled as being on the 16:9 single layered side?!?!?

DVD18s are also RSDL (Reverse Spiral Dual Layer). :)

I remember The Fog from my teenage years. I don't remember it being all that good, worth a watch but I don't think it's something I'd buy.

Watched it last night.
Picture was pretty good for a 20+ year old low budget movie. Nice colours and sharpness. The foggy scenes suffer a bit from grain, but that's to be expected really. It looks better than I thought it would.
I'll be honest and say I only watched it with the commentary as I've seen it countless times anyway (I'll give it a "proper spin" in the next couple of days though) so I can't comment on the main feature 5.1 remix, but the retrospective documentary had some nice atmospheric surround use, which bodes well for the film itself. Nice bunch of extras for Carpenter fans and the documentary tackles just about every issue from casting to reshooting to make the film "work".
I really don't think fans of the film will be disappointed. The transfer isn't perfect but then with difficult material like this and its low budget origins I think it'd struggle to look much better.
I'm well happy with it.

Great copy of the film. Better still was the imformative documentary, similar to that on the Anchor Bay Halloween disc.

A total bargain at £10.99

I think they will be on the dual layered side.
MGM seem to be the only studio using DVD14, they also did it for Mad Max, Usual Suspects, Bandits, ...
It appeases the full market w/s with extras on a DVD9 on one side and p/s on a DVD5 on the other.

I think they are costly / difficult to produce as otherwise seems a sensible way of giving both p/s and w/s

nope they are def on the single side with the 16:9 version, watched this on Sunday, great film, great use of sound effects and another great sounding commentary from John 'King of the Commentaries' Carpenter! Better than John 'I'm not really interested in this' McTiernan on Thomas Crown Affair... he sent me to sleep!

Sorry for the confusion James, based comment on my other DVD14s from MGM.
Am still waiting for mine from DVDSoon, being mean, to save a couple £ but only way I can buy so many DVDs. They now say on back order, even though I preordered a month before release, tempted to cancel and go with Play who claim they have it in stock.

Try and find a friendly person in the IT dept, to remove the block. We cant access HMV but most other e-tailers are fine.
They complained about internet use at my company but when they logged use they found IT were the worst. Was not helped by Marketing Directors PA being blocked for accessing the Britsih Airways website as considered dubious

I may do that... I must admit that I consider them the enemy tho.
however I am safe in the knowledge that i can upload 112x112 pixel colour jpegs to my new mobile phone to use as backgrounds. First thoughts?? PORN!!!!

Received today: the extras are on the dual layer side along with the w/s transfer.

To clarify: on any dual sided disc, the label uppermost indicates the playing side of the DVD - so when inserted with the label saying extras & w/s transfer it's the reverse side, the gold RSDL side, that is played, not the silver side that the label is on.

Hope that clears things up!
