The 2018 restoration of THE FOG was made using the original camera negative which was scanned at 4K resolution in 16bit and we applied a HDR Dolby Vision workflow to the restoration process which resulted in the creation of a 4K DCP, HDR & SDR UHD version and a new SDR HD version which were produced with the same high technological standards as today's biggest international film releases.

This information ^^ wasn't hard to find and is also the case for all 4 of these new JC 4K releases.

Considering this website just gave the abysmal mess that is 3:10 Yuma a higher score than this I think I'll wait for other reviews and opinions from forum members before taking any of this on board.

Some of these 4k discs are just a joke. Why would I pay £30 for something that is a 'slightly' better picture? I truly believe unless they start releasing discs that have the wow factor, this format will never properly take off.

Did you even read the review? That information is clearly stated in the opening paragraph of the picture section.

My bad, I went straight for the nuts and bolts and glazed over the usual part about the equipment they used. Didn't see it in the above paragraph :smashin:

Cheers for the reviews as ever guys.

Really enjoyed this film as a kid watching this on an even murkier format, so looking forward to seeing this even if it's not a significant upgrade. Hopefully it'll crop up a bit cheaper somewhere between now and xmas. Come on black friday old buddy, don't let me down....

Damn...disappointing review. I had this on pre-order for £30 with Amazon, but if the release is not up to scratch, then I may cancel and wait for a price that reflects the quality levels.

I need to add that with this information actually contained within the review it makes this bit/quote even more ridiculous:

It is interesting that, for this release, there is no mention of remastering, just a re-scanning and HDR application, and I think the picture bears that out.

I have cancelled my Pre-order for this release, i have to be more picky these days and the faults pointed out in the picture will just annoy me.

      Whats that for??
Unless you want to pay for a copy for me? I'll wait for more user reviews before taking a gamble

But you haven't waited for more user reviews... According to that post you have already cancelled it based on this one review that needs to be taken a huge vat of salt.

Yea i have Cancelled it, I'll trust the Avf review for now and not bother with this , im sure i'll manage without it for a few months and if it turns out to be a decent release after all, i'll pick it up cheaper down the line.
I'll keep an eye out for your review?

This is how I'm feeling about most releases these days to be honest. These so called limited releases come down in price nine times out of ten, and I want to be sure it's a worthwhile purchase.

Think I will wait for mine to turn up from amazon before condemning it as they will give me a full no quibble refund if its sub standard anyway.

OP you sure your display & player are firmware up to date as that can cause issues on darkness levels?

I’ve bought this on SO many formats - VHS, laserdisc, DVD and Blu-ray, and now have the steelbook 4k pre-ordered as I just love the cover art. I think this is one of Mr Carpenter’s best. Hope that final climactic scene issue is just present on the test disc...

      blueprintreview.co.uk disc review

Let's not get our hair mussed! :D

As with every release I'll actually be watching it before jumping on a band wagon (if there's any space left!).

I respect reviews but until I've actually seen the disc for myself it's just background noise and for sure The Fog has looked bad picture-wise for years so I'm not sure what to expect.

I'm sure there'll be a whole load of nastily compressed JPEGs along shortly to help those who've not actually seen it either. Some folk don't need motion pictures actually in motion to make their minds up.

I fear 4k releases are getting the same shoddy treatment real 3d got ala the faux 3d conversions that ultimately cost 3d its reputation.

Ps I see the 8k nonsense has started (got an email from RS) heralding it this morning. .. It's all beginning to sicken us consumers. Bringing out another format

Ps... Great review by the way !

3D has and always was a snake oil format so never had much of a reputation to begin with. A few nice cartoons I suppose for kids.

I've not seen too many "shoddy" UHD releases they've been knocking me out for months especially with Raimi's The Evil Dead, The Big Lebowski, Predator and The Matrix in the last few months.

A few bumps in the road with Terminator 2 and a few early releases from Universal but otherwise things are looking good.

I'm expecting a lot from these UK Carpenter releases and I was spoiled with Lions Gate's Halloween UHD which looks great so hope they won't be a let down.

Mr. Machen: “11:55, almost midnight. Enough time for one more story. One more story before 12:00, just to keep us warm”.

I absolutely love this film, it scared the bejaysus out of me the first time I rented the Avco Embassy VHS copy back in the early 80’s and i’m looking forward to comparing this with my Scream Factory version.

I'm more worried about people cancelling pre-orders based on one shambolic review.

Be sure to select that 5.1 track, never mind that the 2.0 is the original audio...

I don't have a 4K setup, but I have seen the standard BD which uses the new master and it's the best looking version of the film on a home format. Of course it utterly trounces the original, abysmal UK BD release, but beyond that it's a very nice image in its own right. All of these Carpenter remasters look great.

The BD has LPCM 2.0 and MA 5.1 tracks, but you'd be hard pressed to tell that the surround track has more than two channels.
