I've got a 1.5GHz G4 PowerBook with 2GB RAM. I run use Lightroom but it is seems to chug along and working on my pictures feels more like a chore than a hobby!

My father has a 2.16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo MacBook with 2GB RAM and for scientific research I installed Lightroom and imported my full library. I wish I hadn't because now I know how much faster Lightroom is!!!!!

I don't know how long I can hold out now before Steve gets a few more of my gold coins in exchange for a 24" iMac!?!?!

But you are not comparing like for like

He is using a Dual core CPU - you are not 1.5 single 2.16 Dual
His will be using newer faster memory. its not just the amount.

I bet his HD will be faster too.

I would put money on it, that if you installed Windows (yes you can) on his laptop it would be as fast as the MAC, and wil still be faster than yours.

I agree with what you're saying, but I'd be willing to bet a large chunk of money that even on the same hardware, OSX will run it faster than windows.

Thanks for the input, although I'm a Macaholic and I know exaclty why the MacBook is faster! ;)

I'm not trying to compare like for like, I'm finding out how much faster Lightroom is on a new Mac and therefore how much I need one!

Especially when they put the 'Your's for £xx per month' right next to it!!!!

I need to find somewhere that does 0% on Apple kit although I won't do anything until Leopard is released......

Im thinking the same 2 Giger of the 2.16 model £789 with education discount.

Virgin Credit card 15 months interest free on purchases (but chop it up as soon as you have clicked buy now) = £52.66 per month (peanuts)

I have the 12" Alu G4, and its getting tired now, been on constantly for the last 3 years, owes me nothing.

    I can get a 24" 2.8GHz for £1371.23 through work or the 2.4 for £1079.83

Over 15 months that's £91 or £71 per month. Apart from the extra .4GHz you get a 500GB drive and 2GB RAM in the 2.8 against 320GB and 1GB in the 2.4.

    Decisions, decisions.......

I've just looked and it seems like it's 0% for 15 months on balance transfers with a 2.98% fee (£40 on £1371) but only 3 months on purchases.

Had that with MNBA, they kindly balance transfered the funds into my account which was then under the 0% offer :)

Also don't forget, there is normally a charge for the transfer ...

2.98% for Virgin and you pay the fee last so you have £40 @ 15.9% for 15 months unless you pay off early!

I think you'll also find in the small print that if you miss a minimum payment they'll cancel the 0%! It might not be the case with Virgin but I've seen it with other cards!

I'm waiting for Leopard as well - It's painful because I have the cold hard cash burning a hole in my bank account. However, Leopard looks so sexy i'm just going to have to wait. Mid October is the earliest i've heard.

If you can get the Education discount, I believe it qualifies you for a free iPod Nano too :smashin:

Mac forum is available and has been around for quite a while. ;)

Back on topic: Just the 2 questions !

How did you measure the time difference ?
Had the images been indexed before on the mac ?

Lightroom has a new update to 1.2 -> Win and Mac

You can not compare a mac to a pc or a pc to a mac. They are different in so many ways thats from a fan of both. :smashin:

If you want best value for the 24" then use the build-to-order option and get the 2.8Ghz processor upgrade for only £160 extra (before discount) !! ...

save the money and buy 2 x 2Gb ram from crucial and you'll have a better machine at a lower price - yes you'll not have such a large HD but you're probably better off using an external for backup/etc anyway !! ... and you can flog off the Apple ram to someone who wants to go from 1Gb to 2Gb !!

Apple charge £500+ for 4GB RAM whilst Crucial want £190!

For running Lightroom and the occasional play with PS3 would the extra .4GHz make a difference?

In the MacWorld reviews they recommended the 2.8 upgrade - according to their benchmarks it gives a 10-15% performance increase for less than 10% increase in price ...
