The Devils Backbone is in fact The Dogs B*******.

    Superb film.

I considered Amores Perros to be last years best film so at this rate I will be speaking Spanish before long.

yea Spain really know how to make good films, I love ...backbone. Even my girlfriend was on the edge of her seat throughout and she won't usually go near subtitles.

Gillermo Del Torro is Brazilian or Mexican isn't he?

    He is Mexican.

My wife was the same James.

Normally if I put on a subtitled film she looks at me as though I just fell out of a dogs bottom:(

I will now try her with Amelie, Amores Perros and Audition. I will then move on to the "B"s

PS Try "Cronos" if you can find it.

Yes I saw on the back of the DVD today it was the same guy who did Cronos. I don’t know about The Devils Backbone, but the majority of Cronos is subtiled, I agree a very good film.

I thought Cronos was a very good film, although a bit slow to start with. A totaly unconventional vampire flick, and one of the best world cinema films Ive seen.

If you all like unusual films and are prepared to be shocked/ can keep an open mind check out some of these titles:-

"Avalon" by Mamoru Oshii ( James cameron recomends)
"Battle Royale" a Tikeshi Kitano film
    "dark Water" by Hideo Nakata
"Ringu" by Hideo Nakata (recently been remade by hollywood)
"The Eye" by the Pang Brothers
"Ichi the killer" by Takeshi Miike and not forgetting "Audition" .
All are quite original in their own right and offer something different if your into that kind of thing. You need a strong stomach
for some of the material, but, if you want something different to the usual Hollywood dirge you might like to give some of them a try.

couldn't get into Avalon... no matter what it was trying to say. Devil's Backbone on the other hand is a superb film.

I thought 'Battle Royale' was quite boring and the acting wasn't that great either.

I thought Amores was a great film

I thought Backbone was a horror, I meant to catch it at the cinema but missed it

if Amores is similar to Pulp

what would Backbone compare to Brushy?

...Backbone is a dark, gothic ghost story set in an orphanage during the Spanish Civil War (or was it WW2?).

Great use of lighting... I suppose the closest film in terms of atmosphere would be The Others (although it's better than the others) however there are some really touching storylines in there as well as the main ghost story.
