Original new drama set to release in 2016, tells the decades-spanning story of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the Prime Ministers who shaped Britain’s post-war destiny.

"The Crown” tells the inside story of two of the most famous addresses in the world – Buckingham Palace and 10 Downing Street – and the intrigues, love lives and machinations behind the great events that shaped the second half of the 20th century. Two houses, two courts, one Crown."

Claire Foy (“Wolf Hall”) as Queen Elizabeth II

Matt Smith (“Doctor Who”) as Philip Mountbatten, Duke of Edinburgh

John Lithgow (“Third Rock from the Sun”) as Sir Winston Churchill.

Good pedigree with form in this specific area (writer/director/producer: Peter Morgan/Stephen Daldry/Andy Harries), so hopefully no royal bum licking BS. I wonder if they'll get Mirren to reprise her role as the older queen, or will it just be Foy made up?

According to Blogtorwho the 13 episodes have a total budget of $156m. Surely it can't be that expensive.

Only managed to see the first half hour of the pilot but boy are the production values astounding. As are the costumes and set pieces! Can't say I was particularly gripped by the story but it's early days. Some nice characterizations of historical figures (that old opportunist Churchill was spot on). Vanessa Kirby is pretty, as is C Foy. Another good casting choice as Kirby's Princess Margaret looks like a more sultry and salacious version of her sister, Queen Elizabeth!

Finished the last 2 episodes last night but there were a couple of scenes where I think there should have been subtitles but weren't.. this is where Anthony Eden was talking to the guy in Cairo and then the same guy was talking on film...did anybody have subs for that or weren't there any...?

Another two thumbs up for me! Shame they won't be using all the same actors for Season 2. The cast were excellent here. Top tv!

It's season 3 when the 2 main characters make way for older versions of Her Majesty and The Duke Of Edinburgh

As a staunch republican I'll be giving this a wide bearth, but will probably use the the freebie Netflix code that I got in the Radio Times recently.

As an aside, I do wonder what the royals think of this type of drama? Must be a bit odd to see your early life dramatised just for a bit of entertainment.

I spent a long time in the army but still enjoy war films. Don't care too much for things like Our Girl though where all I see are the mistakes...

I hate the idea of a Royal family - but it's no 'love letter' to them - just an beautifully shot, entertaining drama they shows their human side warts and all.

I did feel Lithgow was miscast however.

Just finished this last night, and even though I'm certainly no royalist, I very much enjoyed it.
Both the scripting and acting was first class, and I wouldn't be surprised if this was up for some award or other!
I really felt for Lillybet, as she seems to be between a rock and a hard place with the events that surrounded her.
    Looking forward to future seasons!

As a republican I was going to give a wide berth too since I assumed it would be just soppy kiss ass. But I'm encouraged by the above and will start it tonight.
