The reviews for this haven't been great, but I'm still pumped for watching a new Cloverfield film tonight once the little ones in bed and the wife is away to yoga.

Even if it's not great, it's not like the dip in quality or plot will effect future Cloverfield films. I wonder if Netflix have the rights to the WWII set fourth film in the franchise?

Yeah i'll be watching this tonight too. Did hear rumbles a couple of weeks ago about this being released on Netflix before cinema, but didn't hear anything since. So i'll be watching it in Dolby Vision tonight so if it isn't any good, it should at least look good!
But a nice surprise, i'll soon see if I agree with Cas! ;)

I must admit, been very impressed with Netflix recently, the monthly subscription is a bargain when you consider all the amazing shows and the odd film that are released.....

It was pretty good, better than average atleast.
Some good actors, atleast somewhat interesting character plots and very nice special effects.

One thing i felt to be odd was the energy crisis.
If it really got that bad, wouldnt we just build sh*tloads of nuclear plants Greenpeace be damned?

I thought it was okay. I wish they would have pushed the Event Horizon influences much further though as I think that would have improved the movie immensely.

The first half of the movie was quite enjoyable, and the credits sequence in particular was great. The latter half fairly dull though; and despite some great effects, the movie looked very uninspired. There was no clear vision to the movie's style, it all just felt a little bland.

I'm still loving the idea of giving smaller sci-fi movies a chance by using the Cloverfield name, but I'm hoping in the future there's less effort made to tie things in to the overall narrative. These movies can exist on their own just fine, and I think they'll be better off if they try to be.

I'm not sure who thought adding Chris O'Dowd to the cast, and telling him to act like he's in an episode of Red Dwarf would be a good idea, but they were very, very wrong.

4/10, what complete bobbins this was.

It's basically a made for TV movie, with slightly higher production values.

Awful script, poorly acted, zero tension, and a complete and utter lack of direction.

In my opinion do not waste 2 hours of your life.
Poor script and equally as poor acting.

      3/10 at best.

The first 30 mins were OK, but then this got dumber and dumber. Not quite as toe-curlingly bad as 'Life', but then nothing could be. Chris O'Dowd hamming it up is utterly embarrassing - I guess the size of the Netflix cheque affected his judgement....

I'd give it 3/10. An opportunity wasted, but at least the LFE did give my subwoofer a fair workout!

It's garbage, the end doesn't even make any sense, as the timings are off.

Clearly nothing to do with Cloverfield, JJAbrahms Company purchased a cheap sci-fi script and added about 30 seconds of cloverfield related dialogue and then sold it to netflix and ran off laughing.

The Cloverfield franchise though is typical Abrams, starts off well but then is just crap.

Sigh. Lots of thoughts, few of them good ones. A disappointment, especially for fans of either of the first two films. 5/10

Watched it last night and knew zero about the plot but a fan of the Cloverfield series of movies.
What did I think? Well, have seen worse films, haven't we all but expected better. Jansen you always knew had a secret agenda, Mundy was a my fav (brought some humor)
It isn't Event Horizon by a long shot but I would not watch it again. 6/10 at best.

I kept on thinking about that Ryan Reynolds film *Life* whilst watching it......for some reason.

I agree with that, but to be fair to him, that whole
arm sequence could have come straight out of Red Dwarf too. I started laughing at "Where's my arm gone?" and kept laughing through to the writing bit

Not a great film, with the Cloverfield franchise obviously tacked on.

I didn't even get that. I had to push this up to -12dB to get reasonable dialogue and bass on this one and even then it sounded weak compared to most films at -20dB on the same system.

I used the Netflix on the ATV4K and it is the first time I have used the app so need to check I have it set up right. I am not sure what the settings are as films I have rented from Apple sound great on it.

I enjoyed it, I couldn't see this getting a cinema release, so Netflix is the ideal alternative. There are a number of theories around the link between this and the other Cloverfield films, the one I like is that (as mentioned by the interview with the author of the book "cloverfield paradox") starting up the Shepherd could tear holes in reality causing problems in the past, present or future.

So; Cloverfield takes place in 2008, is not the world seen in this film but the creature appears because of the events in this film. 10 Cloverfield Lane is also a different world with events caused by the Shepherd and in Paradox itself we see 2 versions of the world, both with energy crisis pushing the world toward war. So we have 4 versions of the Earth, 2 directly linked to this film and 2 related because events there were caused by events in Paradox.

Apparently the next one is set in WW2, so likely to be another Earth suffering the effects of the Shepherd device.

It was alright, but fairly average mix of genres. I think others have just about summed it up.

A point of note was that although it was presented in DV, it was actually 1080p DV, I'm guessing using Rec.709.

It felt like the final scene was added in at the last minute to make you forget that what you just watched had nothing to do with anything else Cloverfield, and leave you on a high.

Like Raymondo, I rated it 4/10 - pretty average really, and while it didn't quite feel like a TV movie, it certainly wasn't made for cinema. I had high hopes after seeing J.J. Abrahams' and Matt Reeves' names pop up during the opening credits.

Maybe, but it works for me, it gives Cloverfield a bit of a licence to be used for all sorts of weird and wonderful films in the future; like a film version of the Twilight Zone. I don't know what JJ originally saw for Cloverfield, whether it was a one off that generated more interest than he expected or if there was always a series of "related" tales to tell.

As much of a disappointment as this was, I'm pleased to learn that a fourth film (Overlord?) is in the pipeline soon. I want the series to continue and hopefully tie together all the loose ends. Lord knows this one didn't.

I believe it's called Overlord because it's set in WW2, so I don't know how much it's going to "solve". I don't think these films work like that, it's not one continuous story, so much as a series of thematically linked films. From the looks of it, Paradox explains the hows and whys that we see in the others.

I'll have to give it a 5/10 also, as mentioned the first 30 minutes are pretty good, an hour in i felt myself nodding off ... A plus point is it looked superb on my tv , very nice black levels..

I have to admit to very temporarily finding myself dozing - I did even see what happened to the Russian guy, or where the kid came from. I don’t think it mattered. Agree, black levels and contrast did look nice - I was quite surprised when I put it on and it said HDR.
