- based on German comedy, Der Tatortreiniger (= Crime Scene Cleaner), which ran for 7 series.

The cast for The Cleaner includes: Helena Bonham Carter (The Crown), David Mitchell (Upstart Crow, Back), Stephanie Cole (Still Open All Hours), Donald Sumpter (Game Of Thrones), Shobu Kapoor (Four Weddings And A Funeral), Ruth Madeley (Years And Years), Layton Williams (Everybody’s Talking About Jamie musical), Zita Sattar (Casualty), Georgie Glen (The Crown, Call The Midwife), Bill Skinner (Ted Lasso) and Esmonde Cole (Still So Awkward).

Written by and starring Greg Davies, The Cleaner follows Paul ‘Wicky’ Wickstead, a state-certified cleaning technician with a very special field of work - he is a crime-scene cleaner responsible for the removal of any signs of death.

Armed with chemicals, scrubbing brushes and cleaning rags, Wicky removes the gruesome mess at the scene of the crime. When carrying out his duties, he stumbles across the strangest of people, from the victim’s relatives, employers, neighbours and acquaintances to occasionally even the murderers themselves. And because he’s a sociable type, he sometimes gossips more than he cleans…

Greg Davies says: “I’m thrilled that this remarkable collection of actors has agreed to appear next to me on screen. Scrubbing up blood in a hazmat suit in front of them will be a pleasure.”

Shane Allen, Commissioning Controller for BBC Comedy says: “Pinched myself when I saw all this comedy and acting royalty in one show. It’s all down to Greg’s well hewn scripts which take us in to different character worlds in surprising and funny ways each week, as Wicky has a transformative effect on those he comes across. The Cleaner delivers on BBC One’s unique commitment to make UK comedy for a mainstream audience.”

Vivien Muller-Rommel, Studio Hamburg UK, says: “It is a great honour for us at Studio Hamburg UK to produce a show that brings together some true British icons. We couldn’t have wished for a better clean-up crew to bring Greg’s brilliant scripts to life.”

Jonathan Blyth, Director of Comedy for BBC Studios, says: “We’re so excited about the cracking cast and unique premise and are itching to take this to a wider global audience.”

The Cleaner (6x30') is produced by Studio Hamburg UK, and was commissioned by Charlotte Moore, Chief Content Officer for the BBC and Shane Allen, Commissioning Controller for BBC Comedy. From Studio Hamburg UK the executive producer is Vivien Muller-Rommel and the producer is Sam Ward. The director is Tom Marshall and the casting director is Tracey Gillham. The commissioning editor for the BBC is Ben Caudell. BBC Studios will distribute the series globally, excluding German language markets.

The Cleaner is based on the multi award winning long-running German comedy series Der Tatortreiniger (Crime Scene Cleaner) created by Ingrid Lausund.

Further broadcast details will be confirmed in due course.

The German series appears to be up on YouTube for free, but without English subtitles

I watched the trailer for this. For a supposed comedy, I didn’t laugh once, let alone smile. Not something that I’ll be bothering with, I think.

I don't think this will clean up the ratings.

I don't know what the BBC were thinking putting this on BBC1 on a Friday night.
This plays more like a BBC2 buried in the week niche (No.9) type affair but then I guess they thought, it has some slapstick to keep it more lowbrow whilst blending in the out-there dark humour with a weekly star...so BBC1 it is.
Seeing HBC in this, reminded me of that other singularly weird role whereby she chose to play a stripper years back. I remember her nudity, trying to be 'normal' like a class tourist and wondering why the hell she was doing it, really?
The following David Mitchell (typically ranting) episode doesn't fair much better; except for a few quirks, like his 'fangirl' visitors.
Greg Davies has done a couple of my favourite comedies but so far, at least, I was left wanting to like it way more than I did.

Two episodes was enough of this black comedy, don’t think I bother with the rest

Poor series so far. Don’t think we have laughed in all honesty. One to forget now unfortunately as we both like Greg as well

It's in completely in the wrong slot. It's a BBC2 slot for me. It's not really an outright comedy, more a surreal drama.

I found the first two episodes terrible. But the third and fourth episodes were watchable. I think he’s struggling carrying a show without a regular cast. His previous stuff has had a solid cast.

I’ve quite liked this. Not amazing but I’ve enjoyed all the episodes. A different theme in each one
