This Thread has a post that compares the performance of the DV78, DV79 & DV27 by a user with a side by side home demo of all 3 players so should be of some help.

I'm in a similar position. Looking at the offers available at Creative Audio, it's difficult to know which is the best option without demoing all with appropriate display types.

David at Creative Audio suggested that you'd only see the advantage of the DV27 over the DV88+/89 when running 'a high definition projector running on a large screen'. However the comparison on Mr Grumpys thread suggests that the difference is clear between the DV78/79 and the DV27 on a CRT.

Out of interest, have you seen many DV27's for around £600?

I disagree that you'd only see the advantage of the DV27 over the DV88+/89 when running 'a high definition projector running on a large screen'.. I have watched a DV79, DV27 & DV29 and can see a difference between all 3 on my 37" plasma. And as none of these DVD players are 'High Definition' I can't see that a high def PJ would make any difference. From what I have heard others say, a SD source will in fact look worse on a HD screen/PJ than a SD on SD without the use of an external scaler.

As time goes on most of the DV27's are getting bought up and therefore they are getting harder to track down. The DV27a was replaced by the DV29 about 6 months ago now and retailers don't tend to hold on to old outdated stock for too long. Add to that the fact that the DV27a is still highly regarded, perhaps more so than the DV29, especially if compared to each other via their analogue progresive connections.

Well I've just had a look at www.sevenoakssoundandvision.co.uk and they have several stores with Ex-demo DV27's from around £1000 that come with the full Arcam FMJ 5 year warrenty. If the warranty is not of a concern then £620 sound fairly good compared to these prices.
