This is and always would be the big question - and I dont quite understand why we havent seen many posts on it.

How good or even how much better is the LX than the XD with SD?

It is a given (particularly for the price difference) that for HD the LX will be if not as good then perhaps better than the XD. Individuals could make their mind up whether the difference in quality is worth the difference in price.

However the big question for many who already own the XD or are wondering about which to buy is how much better (if at all) the LX is over the XD for SD - which is what most will be watching for the forseeable future.

Many like me were persuaded prior to the release of the LX that it was likely to be the same or more likely much worse for SD. Now the LX is released it appears this may not be the case.

I dont understand why there are so few comments on this. I have seen the few comments there are on the 8G owners thread and the LX owners thread - but these are informal and brief. I know ******** has both and has indicated he will compare - but until then there is precious little. I dont understand this -because this must be the most important differentiating issue for most current prospective purchasers.

Couldn't agree more. I'd love to get a view on the benefits (if any) of the LX when watching SD material:lease:

Until people actually see both of these sets next to each other we will not get any replies. Shame as i was really looking forward to this thread.

I saw a PDP-508D this afternoon and have a PDP-LX508D arriving on Wednesday. Not quite side-by-side, but would be interested to hear anyone's thoughts who HAS seen them side-by-side.

The 720p 508xd should be best for SD...and the LX508 should be best for HD...

Hold on!?! No posts saying that 1080p doesn't matter a jot because you'll never notice the difference unless you sit 5ft away??

I always thought Pio 8G er... enthusiasts were quick to point that out!

I'm not looking at this for the 1080 aspect.

This set is supposed to have an even more advanced colour gamut and dynamic range, that is what interests me.

The big thing is its sd performance compared to the XD, if that is vastly inferior like vertually all 1080p sets on the market so far then its going to rule it out for most people.

However if the predessor, the 5000 is anything to go by then the sd performance is not an issue as this is exellent.

In theory, this is a 5000 with the 8G black performance and more.

The thing that sets the Pio's apart is the processing, and you need a powerful engine to do 1080 justice.

For me the test will come tomorrow as I will be fortunate to have the 2 side by side in my home and I will report with brutal honesty as usual. And it won't just be me, Tony from TLC Broadcast will be present also.

If the LX does not offer significant advantages over the XD it will be returned, if it does then there will be a 300 hour run in and calibrated XD for sale in the classified section with side speakers.
