I use WinDVD Platinum on my laptop, with the DVD-A and DTS upgrades....very nice player, fast and no artefacts, and easy to use.

Highly recommended here...earlier versions are free, but the current pay version is much superior(IMHO).

alexs2, have you noticed anything odd with DVD-A playback on WinDVD? What sound card are you using?

I just tried the Corrs - In Blue on CD and DVD-A on my computer. They sound very different, 2 channel 96kHz 24 bit vs the CD. On my hi-fi system though there is very little difference. The sound card is a M-audio revolution 7.1.

    Sorry for thread hijack.

For DVD playback I've never noticed powerdvd or windvd being better but recently in feature terms at least, windvd has stormed ahead. Then again I never used it on anything other than my 22" CRT monitor. It give more detail that most displays I've seen though :)

Only using the Software based player in WinDVD as I have a few DVD-A's which I enjoy when I'm away, but it still sounds better than CD through the laptop.
Sometime soon I'll get around to sorting everything out on the PC at home.

Definitely agree with you concerning WinDVD though....very nice, full of extras, and a very stable player.
