After reading these forums and many hours experimenting, I think I have probably found the best settings for my equipment. As everyone's advice was so useful, I thought I would post back what I did.

    Equipment:

TV: Panasonic TX-28DTX1C IDTV 100hz model.
On this TV, only AV1 has RGB in. There is no RGB out. Q-Link only works properly from AV2.

    DVD/HDD: Panasonic DMR-E85H.

    My connections are as follows:

    AV1 to AV1 with scart.
    AV2 to AV2 with scart.

Use AV1 for playback, allowing you to watch DVD/HDD stuff in RGB.
    Use AV2 for recording.

On the DVD I set up AV2 input as "Video", "Decoder", "Ext Link 2". That means all I have to do to record is set the EPG on the TV, and leave the DVD in Ext Link recording standby mode.

This seems to work well, although Q-Link functions don't seem to work at all now. However, at least I can playback in RGB!! Let me know what you thinnk...
