Given certain peoples clear disappointment with how Rian Johnson supposedly treated The Last Jedi, I certainly hope they don't go and buy the film purely because it's eye candy.

I really liked Thor: Ragnarok but Im in two minds wether to get it in 4k or 3d. Ive recently bought a whole load of Marvel 3D blu rays in the current promotion and have really enjoyed them in 3D. I wish they would start doing more 4k + 3D combos, though I don't expect it will happen.

Totally agree with you - I tend to find Amazon France do some 4k & 3D combos that I've not seen elsewhere; it beats paying over the odds on ebay for some of the US or Japanese combo sets
I've got Jumaji - Welcome to the Jungle and Justice League Steelbook combos pre-ordered
I have previously picked up combos for Wonder Woman & King Arthur

They also have some nice 4k collections that I've also not seen elsewhere - Independence Day, the rebooted X-Men trilogy and Man of Steel/Dawn of Justice

Definitely worth keeping an eye on the overseas Amazon sites for some titles that are not released (yet) in the UK - Grease 4k is showing up on the French site for preorder

Why on earth do so many 4k releases go through a 2K digital intermediate?

Gotg2 - The 3D smokes the 4K UHD especially the IMAX scenes which areshown in full screen.

Thor3 - Will most likely follow Gotg2. 4K UHD disc may not feature IMAX scenes.

Cheers for the heads up, I have Jumanji pre ordered for £18, wonder if I should cancel and go for the 3d combo? I wonder why they do a 4k/3d combo in some countries and not others. Are the french ones cover language if french, probably a silly question lol.

I had Gotg2 on 4k but returned and got the 3D after watching the Brass Tax review. I have been considering getting the 4k again though as the guy who calibrated my pj used some scenes from the 4k during the calibration and it looked amazing from the bits i seen, one part almost looked 3d it was unreal. Ive still not watched the movie at all yet, we watched the 1st the other night in preparation and that was great in 3d so looking forward to vol. 2.

I seen Thor twice at the cinema but never got to see it in 3d, would like a 4K/3D combo for that one.

I did, the skeksis freaked me right out!

I loved all those 80's fantasy films, The Dark Crystal, Krull, Beastmaster, Clash of the Titans, probably all look a bit dated now I should think.

I won't , it was a mess. I do however look forward to Rogue One and TFA on 4K . (And the originals, they had 4K scans done for the Blurays a few years back)

I believe due to the effects being rendered @ 2K or just their choice of camera. (Or both)

How can Star Wars: the Last Jedi be on this list when its not even out yet (I've not bothered checking if the others have been released)? For all we know, the Ultra HD disc could be a pile of rubbish.

Steve - have you been sent a copy before its been released?

Thanks for the recommendations but I'm so not interested in paying £25 for a 4K HDR BluRay, the 4K prices are stubbornly expensive in the main whilst BluRays come down nicely (if you're prepared to wait). My budget for 4K is £15 max, now if we all waited those 4K prices would come down too! Did manage to buy the much maligned Alien Covenant (sorry I like all the Alien films!) at £12.99 during the Amazon Black Friday sale.............

There's a whole lot of chaff on that list.

I have 2049 on 4K disc and it's as nice as it's often drab visuals allow. The original looks hugely superior though.

I'm curious to see how The Dark Crystal turns out. It's a pure nostalgia pick of course, and childhood favourites often don't hold up to scrutiny many years later. I bought Labyrinth on 4K steel for the same reasons and whilst the Bowie soundtrack remains exceptional, the movie, not so much. Terrible transfer too, just a sea of noise and gaudy HDR. Old movies can go either way. Not sure why some manage to escape the extreme grain whilst others do not.

You could invest in an Apple TV 4K. New 4K Dolby Vision movies are between £10 and £14, and older ones can be as low as £4. Of course the bitrate is lower, but if you're buying 2K upscales the difference will be negligible. Vincent did a comparison recently and said as much, and he knows his onions. Real 4K releases show a much bigger difference, but the iTunes versions are still respectable for the most part.

      No lossless audio though.

Super excited about many of these films, but I too wish they made it more clear that the 3d version would come with the 4k. I'm always much more interested in watching the 3d version than 4k.

Because this is a list of discs to watch out for in 2018. Reading things can sometimes be helpful. ;)

A friend of mine is an editor at Warner Brothers. His theory is that studios still rely on a lot of prosthetics and makeup and the higher the resolution, the more fake these begin to look.
