The Ashes

And I still think Prior would be better coming in later in the order.

He's already been tried as an opener and failed.

It's a sad indictment that after three years we still haven't replaced Marcus Trescothick. Is Strauss really the only decent English qualified opener in the country

Having watched these last two odi's I remember now why I lost interest in watching England play the one day stuff.

They seem to have this obsession with playing a number of one day specialist players i.e. bits and pieces players that seem capable of getting 20 or 30 quick runs, but little else.

It is probably a bit old fashioned, but I believe the top order shouldn't be that far removed from the test team.

Me too but unfortunately that slipped my mind when buying the tickets as I bought a pair of tickets for next Tuesday's game at Trent Bridge as well as the following Sunday's game at Chester le Street and these wretched things cost £80 each.

I shall be very cross if I have to watch dross as I've already wasted quite a lot on the first day at Edgbaston where we didn't actually get to see any cricket

Graham Onions has supposedly been called up into the Champions League squad as a replacement for Andrew Flintoff. That doesn't say a lot for Flintoff's batting skills as Onions is a number 11. :D

He has also been added to the Nat West One Day squad for the rest of the current series against Australia presumably to give one of the bowlers a rest. It's a bit of a gamble as Onions isn't even a regular in Durham's One Day side

Nothing surprises when it comes to the one day stuff. I don't think there's much wrong with our bowling, it's the batting we need sorting.

I had a flick through the Sky Sports mag and Nasser asked the question could this be the worst Australian one day side ever. It probably is but at least they don't make so many errors as our lot.

I do hope we win one of the next two so that next Tuesdays game isn't a dead match.

Nasser asked the question could this be the worst Australian one day side ever.

Nasser has a short memory as Australia were a pretty average side until Allan Border became captain and shook it up.

I wonder whether Australia would have been so dominant in the nineties and early noughties if the accident of birth that made Shane Warne Australian not happened as I think that if Warney have been born English or South African and had played in those sides instead things might have been very different.

The current Australian side won't be one of the all time greats but in Michael Clark and Ricky Ponting they have two of the best batsmen in the world and Mitchell Johnson will probably not play as poorly ever again as he did in the Ashes series.

Just think what the series might have been like if Johnson played as well as he did in South Africa and partnered by a fully fit Brett Lee at the other end

Can someone please explain something to me? How did the selectors' meeting go? "Nah, Jonathan Trott's no good at medium length cricket - short cricket, long cricket, but medium cricket, no good, Eoin Morgan's obviously better."

:D

No Rashid either!

Taking Onions away from Durham to join up with the One Day squad and then not play him is another ECB plot to try and stop those bloody Northern upstarts from winning the County Championship again.

As Durham are batting first and are currently 263/0 I think that the plot may have failed.

Looking like money well spent! :D

I'm going with leej and meeting up with curly99 and JulieBell at the ground so if the game is really boring we can chat about AV Forums instead :rotfl:

Still on the plus side surely they can't pick the same donkeys for the rest of the games

Although Strauss saying when they started the odi's they knew they needed to win 4 games to win the series and they still only need 4 games to win it hardly inspires confidence!!

Got to stay in and have my hair and nails done :D....I'll be really grumpy if the Aussies decide to rest the whole team (especially Lee) for the game.

It's a times like this that make me want to start liking football. Started off watching the cricket full of enthusiasm but slowly started thinking of doing more painting. Gave up in the end and painted. They score quicker at test cricket.

Most people don't remember that after we were whitewashed in 2007 and meekly handed the Ashes back we actually won the one day tournament that followed. I don't remember the exact details but we didn't win many games but still found ourselves in the final and won it

Hmmm .... we have turned into a bit of a rubbish team haven't we?

in my very un-informed opinion, Bopara and Shah have to go. Replace with Trot and .... well, anyone! I'll have a go! Cheaper than buying a ticket and I might actually get a run :D I certainly wont tread on my own stumps or ensure I do my best to run out my own team mates.

On a related but diferent note, anyone notice that one of the sky cams had a "duff pixel"? On one of the cameras I had what can only be descibed as a dead pixel appear, sort of top/right ish. Anyone else see it or has my PJ developed an issue?

We've never been really good at One Day stuff and I would imagine it will get worse as the ECB in it's infinite wisdom has decided that we won't play any more 50 over domestic games but will go for 40 overs instead as it's more lucrative. That may be the case but if we can't seem to pace ourselves for 50 over cricket now what chance do we have when no-one will be playing 50 over cricket outside of the international arena.

When Australia dominated Test and One Day cricket a few years ago they did it with almost the same teams playing both but probably just a couple of changes. England seem to prefer making wholesale changes with Bopara, Wright, Shah and Wright joining the top 7 in place of Cook, Trott, Bell and Flintoff from the lineup that played in the last Ashes match.

Flintoff was obviously unavailable through injury but the other three aren't even in the squad but are back playing for their counties and making loads of runs whilst they are at it with Cook making centuries in his last two one day games for Essex.

EDIT - I've just checked the Aussie teams for the final Ashes test in 2005 and also the one day side for the final match in the same tour and the top six were exactly the same people although the batting order was shuffled around

Agreed, for 50 over matches I can't see why we have to have such a change from the Test squad. In the good old days they were capable of doing both, so I don't see why they shouldn't be able to play in 50 over matches now.

i think that the team is not that bad but trott has to be brought in for bopara and the batting order needs a major reshuffle. my batting order for yesterdays match would have gone like this:

Strauss
Wright
Shah
Bopara
Collingwood
Morgan
Prior
Bresnan
Swann
Sidebottom
Anderson

I still don't understand why Luke Wright isn't playing as an opener in this series. Also Prior needs to be shifted way down the order as he looks like a fish out of water batting at 3.

I have also noticed the dead pixel on a certain camera but not on anything else so it must be a problem with that specific camera. Really annoys me when i notice it though.

Because he's already been tried as an international opener and found wanting. His technique isn't good enough to be facing Brett Lee with a new ball in his hand

Fair point. I think it may be worth a gamble though just to mix things up a bit as the current team obviously aren't capable of matching the Australians.

Isnt that the problem though. We have batsman that aren't up to test cricket playing against test bowlers in Lee and Mitchell Johnson. Bresnan isn't test quality either.

Personally I would only have two of Collingwood / Wright / Bopara / Shah in the side not all four.

Not sure i would have Anderson in the ODI either. Not the most consistent player at the best of times.

I don't know for sure but I assume we have restricted ourselves to picking from a squad for these games rather then now having the option to go outside of it?

There is no official reason why we can't pick from outside the squad but I think that it may have something to do with saving face. After all Graham Onions was added to the squad last week.

Andy Flower should go down on bended knee and beg Trescothick to play for the last three games

Two of them have gone....My Way News

Wonder if the reason given is a polite way of saying you're dropped because you're useless?

What will be interesting is if England win the next three will they still bring Collingwood back in for the last game.

Funnily enough if I was going to have 2 of those 4 players i mentioned i think collingwood would have been one of them because he would be one of my two bits and pieces players along with Wright. Although in that respect I guess Bopara can take that role.

With Anderson being dropped does that mean Broad is fit for saturday?

I heard a rumour that the Australian batsmen are all going to bat left handed for the remaining three games to try and make the contest more even

Phew that's a relief, I'd heard they were going to play their kids.

Missed todays game and have just read up on it. I see it was another pathetic effort.
