Hi Im new here but have a few questions about the panny TH42PX60PED which I purchased a few weeks back.

1) How do I get into the service manual.

2) Purple snakes, does this mean the small lines of 'haze' you get round text (where its more visable) like on BBC News 24 (namly red on white or vice versa)

3) The image quality on the freeview box is keck is this normal.

4) I dont have Sky (had a row with them after being the first to take up digital) is the quality better than freeview.

5) Got a DVD upscaller and its much better than normal DVD, but does the gold cables improve the quality on HDMI much ?

Dml, as Paul points out most of the queries you have are covered in the " Color problems in my Panasonic PV60/PX60" thread. Some observations on the points you raised:-

3) Recently I have been of the opinion that the image quality on the built-in Freeview has seemed to deteriorate over the last few weeks. Some programmes are fine but have noticed that more programmes than normal don't look good.

4) When I first had the Panny tried to compare Sky against Freeview and could not really tell if the the quality was better than Freeview - maybe slightly but at the time did not feel it was significantly so. Might be different now though.

On the Deal or No Deal image is this the 'haze' you are reffering to? This is not purple snakes and as I mentioned in the other thread you posted regarding this I have noticed something but not to that level.

Hope this helps.

Mike thanks for your help, I hope you understand that going through 5,000 posts to get the info you want is a task I would rather avoid.

The deal or no deal pic you notice as the lines from one box to another horizontal across the screen. Also in the EPG when you move from one box to another the yellow box goes fuzzy for a split second.

A Panny engineer came round today and said I need a new board as the 'magenta' lines were a sandard problem. Im a little hacked off as I only had the set 3 weeks. A 2 week turn around time on the repair makes me fuming mad.

Maybe I should of got a Sony Bravia LCD machine. (Im a Sony fanboy)

1) Oops don't know...search for it

2) No that would be purple haze...hendrix...purple snakes turn up as irregular magenta bands on smooth white of greenish backgrounds. Use the fog scenes in Master and Commander for a truly nightmarish demonstration

3) Image quality on SD is very dependent on bit rates from stations, so its not the TVs fault. I find Channel 4 to be consistently good...well sort of...
If you cant handle this, and you want SD most of the time, buy a smaller TV or upgrade to a video processor.

4) Depending on bit rates...no one is monitoring the multiplexing process, so even if Sky if better...they may not be in the future.

5) Snake oil comes to mind.

Yes, admittingly the thread is very big so can be a nightmare for new users. I have bookmarked the relevant posts and if any help these are:

Service Menu - http://www.avforums.com/forums/showpost.php?p=2769809&postcount=22

Note: The index button to hold down on the remote control before pressing -/V on the front panel is the one under the yellow one and not the "i" button. As it says be very careful you don't change anything or press any other buttons when in the service menu as you can do some serious damage.

Examples of what the purple snakes look like:

It is annoying you are having to have your set fixed after only 3 weeks. Checked Deal or No Deal last night and it was fine. Despite the problems I still think the TH42PX60 is a great set and would have a plasma again.
