I am going to buy a new PC and am contemplating either a regular TFT say aroun 18" or a 17" LCD TV. With the TFT i could buy a VGA box and TV tuner card or external digibox, please give me some advice on picture quality for dvd's/tv and which LCDs could be good to use as a PC monitor. Thanks.

If you plan to use it as a TV I would get one which can be used on its own -i.e with a built-in tuner. However, I can't give you any advice on the picture quality of these, more than to say that you probably want the ability to use DVI for pixel-perfect display without any fuss.

I have a 4:3 19 inch Sony TFT with X-black panel which gives fantastic picture quality (very black blacks), but doesn't have any built-in TV capability. There might be such Sonys available in 16:9 with tuners now. The only drawback with these X-black panels is that they reflect light -like a normal glass panel would- rather than scatter it. So you don't want any bright lights directly behind your back!
