Chap at work was saying. His wife is a real MRS Bucket and there house is like a showroom. She buys Brand names. What hi fi Do they have. Well you would not be surprised to know its a Sony. There is nothing wrong with that. But thats the only one she knows. I do not think its her fault do you.

No expert opinion - but I would assume it's down to the following factors:

- smaller quantities of higher quality products to a more specialised market.
The big names have OEM manufacturing and sell a mass produced product - they advertise there brand across many different products and markets.

Someone who only manufactures hifi etc - will not be gaining from branding like sony with TV, hifi, consoles etc.

Your average punter does not understand enough about the products and just wants a TV or Hifi that sounds ' okay ' - they want the cables included and don't expect to pay a fortune for OFC or silver connects etc ... because they don't get the difference.

Bottom line - difference market - different budget - not cost affective.

im not sure on this one but i think it might come down to its something a little bit specialist like computer components everybody knows CREATIVE sound graphics speakers etc yet i dont think they advertise on tv yet it is a world wide brand (how about this one is there anyone on this forum who have never heard of creative post in )tv advertising is quite expensivse i think and if you are only going to reach a small amout of audiophiles its not cost effective unless you are sony, microsoft etc i think the coming of the web has improved your chance of becoming a household name without slipping an ad in between coronation street by the way i thought a blackberry was a fruit until i went on the net!

TV advertising = prohibitively expensive at anything other than 1am-5am hours and even those can be expensive if its during a popular show

to put it quite simply, your average specialist hifi manufactuer just would not be able to justify the cost for the likely gain

whats worth remembering is that firms like Sony and Philips do not just make hifi/TV equipment, they have fingers in some very wide ranging pies.....Sony obviously invest heavily in entertainment media now, while Philips are massive in the industrial equipment industry (namely medical equipment and suchlike)......so to them, advertising a hifi on TV is simply a way of making people remember the name Sony, not for the hifi in the advert........whereas, for example Cyrus, they make reference quality hifi equipment.....thats it...not enough people will suddenly go out and buy a Cyrus setup based on an advert.....not enough to cancel out the cost of TV advertising.....even a cheap slot in the wee hours for 30 seconds twice a night for a month would cost close to a hundred thousand most likely.......(im talking mainstream channel, ie ITV or Sky1 type channel, not minor satellite channels, those are cheaper because less people watch them)

many of the specialist makers products are out of reach financially to the masses who watch tv so although people know your name they can't aford the stuff.

Baby milk - I think it is illegal for them to advertise. But why?

I think you're right. I imagine this is down to lobbying by the breast feeding police, but I'm not entirely sure.
